Trim a bunch of the overhang off the island. It looks like it juts out 8 inches into the kitchen.

get the counter project finshed first.. if it will be intentionally different from your other counters then you have leeway to do something . But if you are getting the same counter as the other areas then you want cohesiveness' to a degree. One thing at a time.
