Guest Room decor question!!

last modified: 2 years ago

I have a 10x10 room I am using as a guest room. Its painted in BM Chantilly Lace. Floors are a medium brown LVT.

I have a trundle bed in there with a black/white/grey paisley cover.

QUESTION 1: I'm wondering if I can (should?) decorate using the black and white art (prints/photos/drawings) I have or if I should create a gallery wall using other, more colorful art.

QUESTION 2: What color rug should I buy if I stick with the current bed cover?

QUESTION 3: Should I toss the black/white/grey bed cover and buy a colorful rug and go with a solid bed cover?

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

It can be more relaxing for guests and you to go with bedding that won't show an accidental dirt mark from a luggage wheel when a bag gets opened up on a bed or other such things, so sight unseen I vote for a bedspread that isn't a solid color, but rather a mix that can stand up to boo-boos. Personally, when I am guest in people's homes I enjoy seeing things in their guest rooms that reflect their personality and history. If you have great colorful art, that's wonderful. If you are looking to buy the stuff I typically see in hotel rooms, meh.

And what about the black and white art in a black and white room?

Its a twin bed trundle. Its for when I have a full house and need extra room for guests.

Any thoughts on the artwork being only black and white?

Only black and white artwork would be fine.

Where is a guest going to put all those pillows when they want to sleep? If you only rarely have guests and otherwise want to use this room and the daybed as a sofa, consider getting a couple of wedge pillows

and then take away the majority of the other pillows.

Most guests would appreciate more free space on the surface of the night tables to park their eyeglasses, cellphone, watch, etc when they retire.

Almost any color rug would be fine. Get something easy to keep clean.

I am trying to envision your room without looking at the pictures, as they have so much yellow glow from the yellow lighting that it doesn't look like a black and white room.

Try taking a picture during the day with the curtains open. Also a picture of the whole wall rather than a closeup of the bed would be better.

I have always liked the art with the black and white background and a single color for black and white rooms. Add the same color in several places around the room.

I agree we need better pictures to help. I have used interesting photos in black and white and framed them with super wide white mats and thin black frames. These draw the eye to the small photos and create interesting conversations. I have used family photos, black and white beach scenes from 1900s and abstract art as well as fun kitty pictures.

Why are you asking permission to do a look you clearly WANT TO DO?

You will see the room, a guest will see the room. It's 10 x 10 and I agree a few too many pillows, but I don't have to remove and store them! I don't like trundle beds, even for kids - an aero bed on the floor or a sleeping bag is something they don't mind. But if it works for you , great!

Back to the art? Have at it! Architectural prints, black frames. You clearly favor the "Ralphie" Lauren look.......go for it : )

Framed photography, LOCAL to you would work too. Maps ! Whatever, Wherever you are: )

Thank you everyone! I cannot figure out how to respond individually, so here goes...

The room is 10x10 and is currently being used for storage as I just moved into this home. The room itself will be used rarely as a bedroom and has a low sideboard in it for storage. Pillows can/will go into a large basket.

I apologize for the lighting but its been raining and dark here for days.

I have a TON of art of all kinds, much of it photography as I am a hobby photographer. Its not as though I have to use black and white on the walls. I just wondered if it was ok to do so. The other art will be used throughout the rest of my home as appropriate.

I'm adding a link to my Instagram to give you an idea of my photography.

The question here is what is the room going to be used for on a daily basis? An office? A large closet? A spare bedroom? Music room? Play room? That should be the driving force behind how you furnish and decorate it. You say that you rarely use it as a guest room. Why do you need a trundle bed then? Get a pullout sofa for those rare occasions, which will leave you with more space to use the room the way you intend on a daily basis. A pullout sofa is also easier to use with a rug underneath it.

What you put on the walls is the icing on the cake, or the jewelry after you are dressed. Your photos are very beautiful and any one or all of them would be terrific in the room.

As you say, you have tons of art and just moved in. My suggestion is that you place the art you love the best in the home where you want to enjoy it. Whatever is leftover, can go into this seldom used room.

Also, know that art placement does not have to be permanent. I move my art around often.

As for the actual use of the room: It will be the primary guest room, hence the trundle bed. I have another room that has a pull-out couch but will be primarily used as a den.

As for the daily use of the room: It will be primarily a guest room. It does not have a closet. I have a low sideboard in there opposite the bed that is being used for storage/daily filing/office needs. There is also a small TV.

I have another room that has a pull out couch and is being used as a den but can be used as an additional guest room if the need arises.

I took a peek at your IG and you are an amazing photographer. I personally would do a gallery wall of your photos. Black/white, color or a mix of both. I vision myself as a guest in the room and enjoying your photography. You definitely have an eye, go with instinct. I’m sure it will be beautiful! Post a pic after you decide. I would love to see the finish project!

If it were me, in a minute, I would be selecting colored photos from your lovely collection. Let them be the star and look for bedding that complemnts vs taking over, suggest just adding a duvet cover to your comforter and use less cushions. Room will be stunning. I’ve added below the paint’s color and one look as an example. Your guests will be spoiled and you’ll smile every time you see the room.
