OT: so how deep do plant roots really grow?

Where I live and garden, the topsoil isn't all that deep. Once upon a time it was forest and lots of rich humus. Then it was farmed until the user would have to have added fertilizer to continue to grow corn. On our property and nearby we see trees felled by winds. They are knocked over, unbroken trunks with the root mass intact. Their roots just weren.t more than two feet down.

The forest floor in Britain seems to have a similar problem. The link has a video of the forest floor being lifted by strong winds.
