kitchen facelift HELP

Hi friends, we are moving into a home with a very sad kitchen. I’m not sure I have cash to rip it all out though. Any hot tips on making it less 2000 and breathing life back into it? I was going to do light floors. Now, what color would you take them? I would love to replace counters and backsplash to stay in budget. Any hot tips or ideas? I’ll include my mood board

I bought a house a couple years ago that has an older kitchen that isn't to my taste, but when you move, there are so many things to do, even in a well cared for house. I made a list of everything I wanted to do/change and then prioritized everything. The kitchen ended up at the bottom of the list because it's the most expensive project, and what I have is functional, even though I don't love it. Your kitchen does not have a bad layout and the appliances don't look too old. Tile countertops are less than ideal, but it would be a mistake to put new counters on old cabinets. I think you'll be able to function with it just fine for a couple years. Work on other things and save your money for your dream kitchen if you're going to be living there long enough to make that worthwhile. Living with it will help you figure out what you like and don't like so you make good decisions for the remodel.

I would paint outthe whole kitchen ceiling walls and cabinets, including all the trim a White.

Get a fresh look at the space before you choose a floor.

23 yr old builder grade …presumably. the cabs look okay but they probably are not worth painting. hardware/ floor runners and counter top accesories. thats it for now….you can prep/ cook and store things….wait a while for a nicer kitchen in this big space. it'll be worth the wait.

Ok. This is wise advice. I can wait. 👍

So I would treat myself to delightful bar stools, a new light fixture (or even a snazzier ceiling fan if you must have a ceiling fan there) and since I don't need to worry about kids, I would put a wine rack on the back side of that island

You ddn't put up a photo of a dining room, so is this an eat-in kitchen? If so, I would decide on a dining set that gave me uplift for the space -- and if you already have a dining set, think about whether it could use some tweaks if it isn't already a cool fit for the kitchen.

Agree on waiting a few months before doing anything. It's not a bad layout, and there are some small upgrades you could make that would make things better if you have to wait several years for a big remodel.
- #1 would be lighting. That's a terrible lighting plan that doesn't get the main light anywhere close to where you need it. You need can lights added/moved to illuminate all countertops. Or for a simpler fix with less ceiling patching, install track lights.
- I would rather have formica countertops than tile. If that doesn't appeal, you could replace the island countertop with butcher block, so you have at least one smooth work surface for working doughs and setting a stable cutting board.
- Swap the fan out for an attractive light fixture.

Love all this! Absolutely agree with you. I wonder if I should leave the floor so I don’t have to redo it after a renovation. It does need flooring so bad. 🤪

I investigated sheet vinyl flooring after a DW leak, and I was shocked at how inexpensive it was. We lived with peeling, worn-through vinyl floor for years, when we could have replaced it for $1,000 or less. So yeah, you might look into budget new flooring if your remodel is a long ways off. Otherwise, try to wait at least until you come up with a flooring plan for the entire main floor.

Yes, I may have my flooring guy just remove the small island and lay flooring over the entire space. Then I could even use a cool kitchen table or more of a furniture piece for an island. We have to balance the big needs with less essential. I agree on vinyl flooring! We are going to Lvp for the home and i May as well install the stuff throughout.

That's a great plan. I love furniture pieces as islands. Just order some extra LVP so you can patch as needed if you end up changing the cabinet footprint.

For this kitchen, we might suggest waiting until you have the budget to do a full remodel. Since you just bought the house, living in it some will allow you to know what works for you, and what doesn't. This way you'll know how you want the kitchen to work and do a full gut if need be.
