Washing Machines: Asko Logic or Miele WXD160?

Hi All,

My AEG washer just died after 13 years of service. The service tech said the broken components are no longer made so I’m back in the market for a new machine. This group was very helpful to me all those years ago when I was trying to decide what to buy so I’m back again! I’ve narrowed it down to either the Asko Logic or the Miele WXD160.

I found the Asko Logic on clearance for the same price as the Miele so that’s not a deciding factor. However, the Miele currently has a free 10 year warranty promotion on, which is very appealing. I think the Asko’s warranty is only 2 years, although they’re offering a free ten year warranty in Australia right now so I’ve emailed Asko Canada to see if they’ll do the same here.

There are a few things though that I like about the Asko, which is why I’m hesitating on the Miele:

1. The Asko heats the water up to 90C

2. The machine will be installed on the second level on a wood floor and it sounds like the Asko has a better system for reduced vibrations

3. The Asko has increased capacity (11kg vs. the Miele, which has 8kg).

4. I like the lack of a rubber bellow on the Asko, although I’ve never had a problem with my machine smelling so that might be a non-issue for me

I would love to hear your experiences with either of these two machines (or any other that you think might be comparable), particularly washing performance and reliability. I know I’ll be kicking myself if I go with the Asko and it dies or needs significant repair within the first ten years, but I’m not sure how much of a risk this is.

Hello zteam. There’s another option you might or might not have come across which is Electrolux’s compact washer, which is sold in both Canada and the US and also has quite a large market share in Europe. It has pretty good reviews from multiple sites. It also has a slightly, higher capacity than the Miele does and it’s high spin speed is 1400 RPMs so it’s a pretty good water extractor as well. One other specific feature to note about this particular brand is that they have a second floor guarantee, which is unusual for front load washing machines. I think the guarantee has something to do with the machine being able to remain stable even on second floors which have a wooden base. It also has a built-in water heater with a sanitize cycle option amongst other cycles if that is something that also interests you. CR tested compact washers including the Asko W4114CW which was downgraded for, among other things, its low predicted reliability and wood-floor vibration (2 of 5). It's also overpriced (US$2049). Miele washers did better (>=US$1500) but the Electrolux ELFW4222AW was top-rated and is much more reasonably priced (US$948). Warranties vary by country but there is no mention of a "second floor guarantee" in the warranty for the product linked above (page 31).

Actually, they do, in fact, offer this guaranty in Canada, as well as in the United States.

This is a warranty hidden from consumers. There's no way for a customer to know that this exists. There's no mention of it in the Electrolux "washers" web page, the product web page, the use & care guide, or spec sheet. Only a dealer knows about it; the dealer is instructed, "At the time of sale, dealer provides 2nd Floor Vibration Guarantee Claim Form and complete program information." The guarantee (good only for 30 days). It might not as well exist.
