Vanity too big!! Help!

last modified: 3 years ago

My 36 W x 22 D x 35 H vanity is installed and it looks monstrous in my bathroom. I would think of replacing it, but I am concerned about the cost and waste and I cannot find a vanity I live as much as this one in a smaller size, other than one in pottery barn which is out of my budget now and has a skinny marble top, which looks less durable, etc. Has anyone experienced this?

Can you show us a picture? Which dimension is bothering you: height, width, depth?

Hmmm… I think it looks good. Perhaps the mirror will make it feel more cohesive. Like kandrewspa says - what dimensions are bothering you? Too close to toilet?

I think it looks nice! perhaps a little narrower would leave more space but you’ll want some countertop space so i wouldn’t go smaller!

If you painted it white it might not look as big.

Honestly, I do think it looks very nice and proportional to the space. It doesn’t look too big! Once you get everything in place and finished, I think you’ll love it.

I think it is just the shock of install - wait a few days and see what you think (I think it looks nice!)

It is fine and honestly the bigger the better for bathroom storage.

Why can’t it be slid all the way to the right?

I don’t think it’s too big, it’s just new to you! Give it some time. A beautiful mirror, and you’ll love it!

All of the dimensions, the height, the width, but especially the depth, which is 22.

It looks monstrous cos it is dark.

In a small bathroom …the more room in the cabinet the better..pushing it against the wall if possible..is a good idea..especially if there are no storage areas for towels,supplies..extra toilet paper?

I'm very experienced with small bathrooms and trying to make them workable without looking cramped. I think the dimensions of this vanity are way more functional than anything smaller and I can certainly attest to how hard it is to find a nice vanity in a smaller size. Be selective and intentional about how you style the room and I don't think the vanity will feel too big.

What mirror, towel holder, decor, sink top accessories have you selected?

It is not uncommon to feel shock when a space is just completed. Move into it and live with it for a few weeks and it is very likely that what bothers you now will come to feel normal and not a problem. This has happened to me many times. I feel your pain!

    Blue vanity from Costco.

The Costco vanity has so much more usable storage. The vertical stack of drawers makes it look slimmer too than the big two chunky doors on the black one.

@richardparker some shelves over the toilet will help balance your space, especially when you hang a mirror over the vanity. With the black vanity, maybe these shelves? https://ironabode.com/riviera-shelving-unit?gclid=CjwKCAjwv-2pBhB-EiwAtsQZFJQ5sXGCRFqiMNepSckCyBkz4Snh3QVgXm6UWjyvSXVWt0WjRTdkbxoCj5kQAvD_BwE

Accessories will help with creating more balance, as there is nothing else drawing the eye. Suggest brass hardware to complement the faucet and a towel ring to fill the gap visually. Your choices are lovely.

Hi, honestly I don't think it's too big it might seem that way to you because the whole bathroom is white and the vanity is quite dark so it comes off a bit heavy in the space. But I think adding a mirror and all of your bathroom stuff will make it look like it fits better.

It's not too big! Put a tall and proportional mirror above it - 30" wide and 42" high

Add some great art over the potty. You aren't finished in the room yet.

I agree that it's probably the shock of change, but to be sure, measure to make sure that the vanity-to-shower space is at least 30" to be sure your toilet has (legal) breathing room.

It’s fine. The room isn’t finished. Follow Jan’s advice, Maureen’s advice, etc. It’s not done and it’s new. Your reaction is normal. Keep going.

Personally I am not a fan of a bunch of tiny drawers …to open and close each one searching for things..and limiting the size of things that will actually fit into the drawers..

Also confused about color🤷🏻‍♀️…if you are considering blue it seems to me more limited when choosing towels..shower curtains …accessories, etc

I will repeat..........You have white walls in your FACE - NOTHING ON THEM.

It "looms" only because of this. It is no different than good realtors staging a home. Without art, without mirrors, without a bed in a bedroom, a rug and couch etc in a den? A table and chairs in a dining area? Your eye feels and sees no depth, no true size and no proportion or relationship to anything. the house may look a lot smaller than the sq. feet contained. Another example?

Despite the fact a wall of bookshelves may shrink a room by a full foot or more? That room will feel larger. So, no hand wring here. Finish the space.

AND?? If it still feels wrong? Paint the darn walls the color of the v.a.n.i.t.y and it wall be swallowed by the wall color and it will quite literally.... "shrink" before your very eyes: )

Btw.....all that will happen with smaller is more gaps. Why? Because it is installed to your PRIOR sink center. If you wanted it smaller and tight to the right wall? You move that plumbing over at the PLAN of the bath, that's why = lol..or you buy a pedestal sink. Always airy.

I would also add keeping the rug simple..one color ..with good non-slip features…getting two …and adding a towel rack that fits the rug installed somewhere you can hang up the wet one and put a dry one down when needed…if you prefer a nicer rug..a simple bath mat towel can be hung in the shower ..and put down while you shower …and put back into the shower area when done…we have tufted wool rugs in our bathroom…they look beautiful..last forever …clean easily ..and never slip or slide..

Roll up a hand full of white towels and place them on the shelf below. That'll make it less dark.
