HOA Pool Surround Reno

I am a board member involved with making decisions regarding pool area renovation as part of a complex wide re-paint project. Woods beams attached to the (six) pictured pillars have been removed and we will not replace them. The area is west facing so gets afternoon and early evening sun full on. We are considering removal of all pillars, or leaving the second and third pillars from the left and using those to support a pergola of something durable. Unit balcony beams have previously been replaced with alumawood and that has proved to be an excellent decision. I am asking for advice on if that will be a good attractive solution, or for alternatives to provide some shade in the area. The nighttime picture shows that juice to many lights had to be cut to get the rotted beams and connecting wood out. Safe and proper lighting will absolutely be addressed immediately, if only temporarily. Budget is always a concern, so we’re looking for long term lower maintenance and consideration that we are in an area of SoCal that gets strong winds. I Appreciate any and all ideas.

Do you have photos of “Before?” Those might help inform pros of what the original design intended.

You should stop looking for help from anyone except a pro used to dealing with commercial type buildings with pools . I would not even hazard a guessat what is the right thing to do . We have no real info only a plan you do not even know if it works .To me those pillars look ridiculous but who knows why they are there.

Those columns were ALWAYS overscaled in their design. Take them down.

then if you want a pergola purchase one of the powder coated aluminum kits. Those existing columns could support a jumbo jet. Take them down.

I didn’t know what kind of professional to look for and now I do. Hopefully, a few exist out here where we live. And yes, the pillars are going to the dump, that demo will happen over the next few days. We are well aware of liability, code and safety issues and have those professionals, all vetted. It’s the getting of good ideas to enhance the area and provide the shade function that I’m concerned about. I’ll look for a picture of the pergola pre demo.
