• How about surface-mounted track lights?
• Or track lights suspended from the ceiling?
• You could put different types of track heads or pendants in different places.
• Or go wild with LED strip lights that you could arrange in any pattern?
• Here's a flat panel LED but note that the electrical box is inside the ceiling, not on the ceiling surface. You would have to wire and mount electrical boxes on the ceiling and then suspend the panel below the electrical box.

Would be great if someone made fiber optic lights that you just stick up on the ceiling. There is an electrical circle in the middle of the ceiling in our living room. Does that contain the electrical box?

Well you may, but if you take a look at the linked photo, you'll see that with those small, modern track heads, it looks pretty great on that cement ceiling.

Did you look at the LED strip lights image I linked? That's precisely what's shown.
