White kitchen sink, which material?

I am looking for a white under mount sink for my kitchen remodel and am overwhelmed by the choices in materials. I’ve read the pros and cons lists for things like enameled cast iron, fire clay, composite granite, composite quartz, and porcelain. The composite quartz and granite are supposedly stain resistant but I’ve read many customer reviews complaining otherwise. The sink will get a lot of use/traffic and I would like something stain and chip resistant . Can I hear your personal experiences with white kitchen sinks you’ve had?

Have you tried searching the Discussions for previous questions about this? There are a bunch...

Get the samples of the quartz sinks you like. The Karran and Elkay are much more dense than the Blanco and therefore less likely to stain. If you aren't a rinser, you probably shouldn't get a white composite sink. They are all quartz by the way, no matter the sales hype for granite. Granite is loaded with feldspar and mica; not good in a sink.

There are tradeoffs with each sink. Porcelainized cast iron can look good up until you drop that cast iron skillet and chip it; it wears too. I wouldn't have a fireclay sink; they crack and are unrepairable.

Thank you, Joseph. I’ve noticed you recommend the Ellkay Quartz Luxe in ricotta in previous threads. Have you continued to have good feedback on this one? What makes this one better than the Elkay classic?

IMO there is only one choice for a sink in a well used kitchen and that is stainless and for sure not any white sink will stand up well over time .

I have no interest in stainless steel, that does not go with my decor thank you

I have two white fireclay sinks in my kitchen. Five years in and they are fine. The cleanup sink I put a metal grid on the bottom as a just in case. The prep sink has nothing inside it.

My condo had a beige fireclay sink and it too looked good the last time I saw it which was 9 years after I had put it in. (We sold the condo and became friends with the woman who bought our condo.)

My mother had a white porcelainized sink in our house growing up. It looked as good the day they sold it (after raising three kids and living in the house 20+ years) as when she put it in.

Enameled will get gray marks from stainless pots and pans. Some people put a sink protector in the bottom of the sink to prevent this.

I gave up and chose a black sink, which needs to be towel dried periodically to prevent water marks.

Six of them enough? Awful. All cast iron, all stained, scratched, constant need to remove stains.

I've seen too many tired, stained white composite sinks at garage sales to even consider a composite sink.

The sink will get a lot of use/traffic

If you must have white, then get a Kohler cast iron sink and baby it. You can always have it replaced when it starts getting ugly.

FWIW, I replaced (with help from DH) #6, a very, very heavy Kohler cast iron sink, with a Kraus stainless steel sink.

I have had two Kohler cast iron sinks in white. The first one was used for 15 years before we remodeled, the second one is going on 10 years. Both look just as good as the day they were installed. I do not understand the people who say you need to baby them or they chip. Neither of mine ever did with normal use. My beach house has a Franke stainless sink which I despise. Can't wait to remodel and get rid of it.

Density. The Elkay Quartz Luxe is probably the most dense composite sink on the market. The more dense, the less likely the staining. The samples don't lie.

Here's a very nice black Karran that went in several hours ago:

Note the blown reinforcement rod between the sink and the front edge in the first picture please.

I put in a cast iron sink back in the mid-90s, but disliked the marks, staining and wouldn't opt for that again. No chipping, but I was pretty careful and I didn't have the heavier enameled cast iron cookwear that I have now and use regularly. The people who bought that house put in another stainless sink like the one I'd taken out for the cast iron.

Joseph, that looks really nice! What happened with the stainless sink? Was that spontaneous?

I have a Blanco full/3-4 double sink although in a cocoa brown color. Haven't had any scratching etc. issues but I do have stainless grid protectors in both bowls. Now 8 years old and no issues.

Heidi, the reinforcing rod that was fitted in the granite rusted and blew out the stone. Stone is porous and the area in front of the sink gets lots of water.

We have a Kohler white cast iron, going on 35 years old (original to this house), still looks great...
