Source for New Dawn?

I was thinking of placing an order with Palatine but I could be looking for New Dawn in the spring and Palatine is not offering it. I'd like to get a bare root from a company that grows organically or at least offers a lot of very healthy roses. Anyone know of another source?

New Dawn is a very popular variety and should not be difficult to find. I am not sure what exactly do you mean by growing the roses organically but many good nurseries offer it.

    these should be own root.

Probably grafted I did not check (I would pick own root)

I could try to root one over the winter from my 90 year 9od 0oplant. No guarantees just in case you cant get one elsewhere.

The rooting rate of New Dawn is almost 100% in my garden. (I use hardwood cutting.) If you have neighbors who grow it, try taking some cuttings from them.

It's a pity that I'm too far away from you. Many neighbors and friends wanted it this year, so I propagated 12 plants. Currently, there are still two pots of rooted cuttings waiting for someone to claim them.

Thank you Diane for going to the trouble of finding all those links. Honestly, I hadn't even started to look, because I thought someone here might have experience with a nursery they trusted to provide healthy roses. I used to buy from Pickering who was highly recommended and I had great luck with their bare root roses. They actually sold me the New Dawn I had. They were very focused on careful practices to provide the healthest roses they could. When they went out of business, the owner died, I got another recommendation here for Palatine. But I'll look at the links you supplied and see what I come up wtih.

FeiyLo and Vaporvac, it's very generous of you to suggest giving me a cutting. I wouldn't want to put you to that trouble, and I am sure since it is such a popular rose, I won't have any trouble finding one for the spring. I appreciate your offers, though, thank you!

All the nurseries I tagged on the own root list are on my short list of best nurseries to order healthy roses from. I do not know if they are grown organically as that would imply I know even what specific fertilizer they use, but I know their roses are healthy. I have ordered from all of them personally as well from palatine and they are great.

I bought mine from Regan nursery. Believe it or not, after almost 10 years, it’s still not very big.

Thank you Diane, I'll check them out!

SoCalGardenNut - Is it possible that rose was mislabeled? It looks more like Eden to me than New Dawn. I just don't think the New Dawn flowers are that full? I am nowhere near experienced beyond my own New Dawn I've had, but I'm just going by what I remember it looking like as I was searching for it. And it reminds me of Eden. Maybe someone else here has a more educated opinion?

No, the label is still on, but in the past I thought it was Wedgwood and posted on some forums as Wedgwood until i found the tag. I personally thought i lost it and some people say you can’t grow New Dawn in SoCal.

I would mail order now Prairie rather than wait to look for one in the Spring. Dianela listed great sources.

It may not be as easy to find the classic roses in the stores in the Spring as it should be.

Sheila, you are right. It has worked out well for me when I've ordered for a spring delivery of bare root. I had looked right away at Palatine, since I'd ordered from them before and saw on the rose forum, the announcement of their December catalog. I definitely will look right away.. I know the good nurseries have a lot of popular roses and that is one, and they sell out quickly.

I just finished re-planting the Penelope Rose that we dug out for the fence install. So happy that is done and I saw nice new white roots on two Penelope. The Aloha rose has already been moved to the front in a sunnier spot. I will post photos to my thread when I get a chance. Thanks for looking out for me. :-)

SoCalGardenNut - Isn't that Eden something! And the structure it is climbing on looks amazing too!

Thanks Vaporvac, I didn't realize there was a double named 'Awakening'. Thanks for that photo Sheila, that 'Awakening' is really double and that photo of the bush is such a pretty natural form.

Here is a photo of the new section of the gate where my New Dawn/Penelope/Aloha were growing with a Clematis and honeysuckle. Maybe you can see the Penelopes planted for next year. I planted them further away from the fence than the last time. Penelope grows like a shrub and can get pretty big, so I'm hoping it can fill in the corner there and I'm leaving room along the fence for another rose.

Your fence is gorgeous without any plants, I can’t even imagine how pretty it will be once your roses get some size!

VaporVac, well look at that, New Dawn as your avatar, must mean it is one of your favorite roses! And you have Awakening. I lost my New Dawn when preparing for the new fence and I really really enjoyed it for the 10+ years I had it. And that and Penelope are the only two roses I had that only bloomed once for me. I know ND is supposed to be repeat but mine was in 6hrs or less of sun and when we just got finished prepping that bed along the new fence for the roses, I couldn't believe the roots from the surrounding trees that they were trying to grow in. So I am expecting anything I grow along that fence to now have a much easier time growing.

Thank you Oursteelers, we're really happy with the gate. I wasn't sure I was going to love it but I do. Such an improvement over what was there. The thing that I was looking forward to the most, was a gate latch that worked. lol And this new one is great! I think it's going to be quite awhile before the roses get some size. [g] Starting over again, I guess.
