Basic, Dingy Porch Upgrade

I hate our exterior. I feel like it screams late 1980’s- early 1990’s. I prefer timeless and classic. How can I make this porch less dingy? And the exterior less cookie cutter?

    I think it's a nice house! I don't really understand your dislike.

The only thing i notice is the odd division of the leftmost portion of the facade -- maybe enough to paint out the downspouts to match the house? or are there changes in plane there?

Along with the others' comments, I think that the landscape could use some upgrading. Look at the landscaping in the first photo that Diana Bier posted. It frames the front door, leads the eye to that door (especially with the door being red), and overall lends a more sophisticated, more formal look to that house.

I think that in addition to painting your house (and all of the downspouts--I don't like that they're highlighted in white), that some adjustments to the landscape are going to make all the difference.

I agree about the pastel colour of the house being rather meh. Get a slightly stronger colour and maybe change the railings to black metal - or paint them black.

I think it is classic so wouldn't want ya to mess with it too much but for a bit more modern look take the shutters down so it matches the left side of the home.

I think the porch is fine as it is but the landscpaing leaves much to be desired . If it is dingy then we need a close up to see that. For a bit of change why not try removing all the shutters for a bit cleaner look and some color . I would paint the front door and all the sidelightpart and trim all one much brighter color .I do not think a metal railing suits the house as it is.

It depends on what your budgt is. With enough money you can transform the house into anything you want. With a small budget you will have to be content with things like changing out the railing maybe or revamping the landscaping.

Honestly, your house is fine. But if you want more curb appeal, you could change out the porch for a pergola, which would make your porch and your interior off the porch lighter.

Perhaps consider expanding the walkway on the left side as a front patio. These have become popular since the pandemic. where neighbors can greet each other, watch kids play on the front lawn and, in general, make the front of the house more inviting to the neighborhood. This idea in red brick or cement and red brick would look great.

I think your house is lovely! I do agree with Patricia I would paint the front door and sidelights etc in same colour.

I agree it screams early 1990s and I totally get why you want a change. Don't know what your budget is. I'd ditch the pastel blue. A more sophisticated and historic paint color would help a lot. Diana's Warren Square and 1929 pics would be very nice, but you'd have to see how that would work with your roof color. I think your porch looks dinky not dingy. I'd like to see the porch railings and posts painted a darker color, perhaps the same color as the body as the house so they disappear.

Try something as simple as removing the railing along the edge of the porch. It will visually open the space. You will probably need to leave the railing on the steps for safety. Then choose one of the suggested paint colors.

Taking off the shutters would help. Changing the siding and the architectural details would make a big change but how much to you want to spend.

I would think twice before trying to change it into a Modern Farmhouse like the pictures Beverly posted because that will just firmly plant you in the 2020's. In ten years you will be back here wanting to "modernize" it again. What you have is classic - the builder avoided a lot of the excesses of time it was built such as half moon windows and excessive use of gables. I hope a different color and some landscaping improvements will perk it up enough for you as the other commenters suggested. I don't think there's any need to go over the top with a major overhaul.

If you really don't like it, maybe you've outgrown it? How do you feel about the interior and the neighborhood? It's not a great time to move, but maybe you could think about looking in a couple years. It would be a shame to live somewhere that makes you unhappy. Just remember, there is no such thing as the perfect house unless you have unlimited funds.

I don’t see the porch as dingy. I see it as Victorian. You can make it more Victorian and unique by adding korbels and ceiling facade trim. I know someone who took a jigsaw and patterns to make a custom lacey wood trim that has animals and plants specific to his location. Or you can change the rails to make it more modern. I don’t know what direction you want to go in. Maybe you could post some pics of exteriors you like.

I would seriously consider how you want to use the porch first. I am on my porch every morning for coffee. My porch has a comfy wicker sofa and two chairs, with cushions and it will have ceiling fans. To me, porches are for spending time on, not as much for impressing the neighbors (unless you want to have them join you).

You can play with removing the shutters. Save them, though, because you might change your mind later. I like the windows on the left - they seem more modern.

You can make big changes with landscaping. I met someone who planted a garden in their front yard that looked like a wide river of flowers flowing down a hill from a beautiful shade tree. You can make a statement in your front yard that will draw all attention away from the building.

All that being said, I used to have a house with a facade I hated. It wasn’t bad. Other people liked it fine. My Mom said it looked like a doll house. I just let the trees grow in front of it so you couldn’t see it easily from the street. It was neatly painted and the yard manicured with a nice curved paver walkway and planters, but the best part was being inside with trees right outside the windows. Living in the house was great - looking at it from the street was just OK.

One more thing, about paint. You can make it look more modern by choosing two shades of paint that are close in lightness and neutral. Two light shades of paint would be my choice. But you could go in any direction.

If the porch looks Victorian (which I'm not sure it does), you wouldn't want to make it look MORE Victorian. A Victorian porch on a Colonial is a mishmash of styles.

I don’t get all this “ screaming” except maybe if certain colors were “ in style”. It’s not “ historic classic ” from 1920, but it’s a lot simpler and cleaner than many of any recent decade. Plus, what decade should you be in? 2020’s builds are anything but classic. But anyway.

I do agree that removing the shutters is a good idea especially since they’re not consistent and you may be repainting anyway.

Play with the visualizers on the paint company websites. It’s possible a stronger color, as was mentioned, will make your house less “dingy”. A great front door color makes every house look better.

Try removing the shutters, upgrade your landscaping and see how you feel. All of these ideas cost time and money, so let us know your budget.
