Thoughts on this linear chandelier over 80" table in 13'x16' DR?

So... I'm having a bit of shock after taking delivery of this fixture, since the box it arrived in was shockingly big and heavy. This afternoon I even messaged with Visual Comfort to confirm the hanging weight is 28lbs and 51" long. They confirmed the actual size and weight, but too late to save me -- the delivery size got me overthinking and now I'm wondering, is this just too big for our room!?

I fell completely in love with it visually, but despite truly loving the design, I don't want something that is gorgeous, but looks like an awkward oversize fit within the space.

The key dimensions involved are:

Room size 13' x 16' / Ceiling Height is 104"
Table size is 80" long (30" high)
Light fixture is 51" L, 26" W, 21.75" H (Height is from bottom of glass bulb just up to the lowest round connecter ring to which the ceiling chain will attach)

At least initially we don't have any other furniture in the room, but may add a sideboard/storage when we recover from the renovation costs.

I just did quick math and assuming the bottom of the fixture is 38" above the table that leaves only about 13-14" of chain between the ceiling shell and the connector ring. Also concerned if, visually, that is enough length in the chain? I wouldn't want to hang it much closer to the table as my husband and son are each 6'6" tall and I don't want them feeling like they might knock it as they stand up from the table.

I'm clearly struggling - thank you in advance for your thoughts!

have no idea what the room looks like, including all furniture. if you want a real opinion, you're going to have to post pictures. (if you don't have anything in the room, you can still post a pic of it, and perhaps pictures of the table you're considering)

Based on your dimensions given, the ceiling may be a bit low, but hard to say w/o any reference.

I believe this is the same size as yours. this ceiling if prob 9'

found another place selling it for 3,389.00. (Hope you didn't pay that Houzz price!)

I think 30-36" above the table for an eight foot ceiling. Add three inches per foot of ceiling height.....38'-41' above table would give you your height. Measure the room length in feet, double that and convert to inches and that give you an idea of size of chandelier....I love the chandelier and think it will look amazing....!

Thank you Susan! Sorry but can you help me a bit with the #’s. Are you saying that I was correct to think bottom of the fixture would ideally be around 38” above the table? Also- if room length is 16, double that (32) -- so 32" is really the ideal length of the linear chandelier (in which case, this 51" is way too big)? I had been going by the table size to calculate a chandelier not bigger than 2/3 the length, but perhaps I should have looked at it from room size and not table size. Eeek!!!

Your math is correct. The chain will be 13 - 14" The pictures shown above are in rooms taller than yours. Not sure how much taller, but using your measurements and projecting them on this photo, it's more than 104". Here's a visual to help. I took the height of the table leg and assumed it to be 30". I then projected it on the various spaces. Perspective of a photo can be deceiving, but it will give you an idea.

I'd start by hanging it 34" above the table and see if that causes an issue with your DH and son getting up from the table. They likely will push back from the table before standing and won't be directly under the light. Lower may actually feel less likely they will hit it than more at head height. You can always try it, if it doesn't work, save all the packaging and return it. It's a large fixture but without knowing what else is in the room, hard to say if it will be fabulous or not so much so.

Also consider the width of your table, i did not see that mentioned above: For dining room chandeliers, the diameter of the overhead fixture should be one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. Keep a chandelier’s diameter within 12 to 15 inches from the edge of the table to avoid bumping heads. If hanging over a table, chandeliers should hover at least 36 inches above the tabletop.

Otherwise, it should be fine assuming you are hanging with the length in the 16’ direction of the room

PS: Julie Neill is the fabulous designer, here in New Orleans. You should be able to find the Talia light fixture styled on her instagram and website and many other design sites. it is a very frequent used fixture.
