Small bathroom help!

Our house is almost 100 years old and this small bathroom is the last room we haven’t touched since living here! I bought some wallpaper that I want to put just on the wall with the mirror. I’m inclined to want a much smaller mirror just over the vanity, but my husband thinks this oversized one makes it feel bigger. Any advice? If we get a smaller mirror, I found a gold framed one I love with the wallpaper, but all the other hardware is nickel. Shower head, faucet, lighting, everything. Would mixing metals be ok or too overwhelming in a small space? Thank you!!

Definitely a smaller framed mirror! Your instincts are correct. Love the wallpaper too!

mixing metals is fine. Yes, smaller mirror. and CHange the window covering.

or is that a shower curtain?

Adding a glass shower door would be great, thos spendy, a great investment on a better looking space.

As much as I love that wallpaper and would like to see more of it, I agree with your husband that the large mirror does make the room feel more spacious.

I'm not a fan of the large mirror. Nothing wrong with small spaces.

    Yes to getting wallpaper!

    No problem mixing metals.

Option #1 - Use the wallpaper on all walls and small mirror.

Your 1970s huge wall mirror takes away from the charm of your 100-year old bathroom. It also creates a really striped effect with the wallpaper just showing above and below the mirror, which is going to make this small room feel broken up into chunky color blocks. By the same token, I think it gets busy in a small space to have accent walls so I'd paper all of the walls and use the smaller mirror.

Option #2 - Print as shower curtain, big mirror, blue walls.

The same wallpaper print is also sold as fabric and you can have made as shower curtain using the print. The shower curtain is the largest uninterrupted swath of "wall space" in the room so you will see a lot of it. Keep the mirror but have a frame built around it so it looks finished. Then paint all of the walls a blue to match the background of the print.

Here is a William Morris print with a similar vibe just to give you an idea of how rich a shower curtain can look in a great floral print. When opened all the way, you'll see more of it than you will if the print is used as wallpaper.

(Picture from etsy, the colors don't look as nice as your wallpaper sample, but could be the monitor. Order a swatch to see.)

I had the same sink, toilet, and similar floor in an equally small bathroom in a 170 year old house. We had a beautiful old mirror but put a medicine cabinet up for staging for sale. Thought I'd post it so you can see a similar sized bathroom with a small mirror.

    @Amanda T

You could do both with your mirror delemia.

Instead of the big tacky mirror, go with two smaller ones that match. I have done this before and it breaks up the monolithic-look, but would also reflect and make the bathroom look bigger.

    You both win that way!

FWIW We have a similiar aged house and had a similar mirror -when we removed it we found the original recess for a medicine cabinet so were able to install a flush style cabinet in the that footprint

Hi, I love the wallpaper it's a very nice detail, I agree with you that a smaller mirror just above the sink with look much better, I would love to see the mirror that you found. Mixing metals is completely fine you shouldn't worry about it.

The mirror over the toilet…..no, no. What does it reflect of the person standing in front of it….no, just no.

Thanks for all your advice!! I’ve decided to go with one smaller mirror, either this one pictured or something similar if I can find it thrifted :) hopefully I can get this project knocked out soon and post an after photo!

You should be able to find something like that on Facebook Marketplace. Looking forward to the after pics.

    Great wallpaper choice.

Yes, downsizing the mirror was the right choice for this bathroom ... mirrors over the toilet are just wrong.
