Are you considering decorative changes or gutting the bathroom?

Decorative changes: If the bathroom tile is in good shape, have it professionally cleaned and sealed. Then update the lighting and cabinet knobs. Choose a fabulous wallpaper.

Wow, that's overwhelming. On the positive side, it's a nice shade of blue.

If you're looking for small changes, I'd do just these things:

    - Replace the vanity, if possible. Just the countertop if the whole vanity isn't realistic -- a simple white top will fit in /give the eye a rest from the tile. This one change will make a world of difference.

    - Add a frame to the mirror. You'll be surprised how much this will "upgrade" the room.

    - Change out the ugly Hollywood bulb light fixture.

    - Add a simple, solid white-with-texture shower curtain. This will cover up the tub /calm things down a bit.

    - Add a pretty curtain to the window, which now looks bare.

    - Add something organic -- a woven basket perhaps -- and some greenery.

    - I'm tempted to say add wallpaper or paint above the tile, but -- no -- the blue diamonds on the back wall are still a strong statement (though once you've done these other things, no longer an overwhelming statement), and they would compete with anything else on the wall. But do add some nice artwork. With a strong blue presence.

without gutting the whole room, I would remove/replace the vanity and add a simple solid countertop.

Smaller framed Mirror and wallpaper to compliment the existing tile.

I would also add a glass shower door, if budget allows.

Modernize means different things to different people.

I can mean a little bit of cosmetic update on a budget -

Ditch the tile top on the vanity for a soft white solid surface . A Dupont Corian top, under mount sink in a viteous china - same soft white.

    New 8 " spread " faucet

lose the blue knobs, get a simple shower curtain.

    or?

Get all the tile off every wall, and in the tub shower. Get a new white tub, a new white toilet and vanity in a white, a paint, or a wood stain. As in start over completely . : )

Lots of ideas at various price point above. Some comments:

Look at the floor tile to see if it goes under the vanity. If not, a custom vanity could be made to sit exactly in or on the one-tile-deep "hole" formed by the floor tile where the old vanity sits.

The big mirror is set flush with the wall, into the tile. A frame could be added to the mirror surface. If you replace the mirror with anything smaller, there will be a hole-border one tile deep where the old mirror was inset.

A custom tinted satin enamel paint could be used to paint over the blue accent tiles. It will last a while, not forever, but it would be an option if you simply can't stand the blue wall tile and countertop tile. It is a finicky job, doable with patience. Try out the look of no-blue by taping some white paper over the blue tiles.

If you don't want to do a full remodel, I agree with Jan. At least change out the counter top to a solid surface to make the room less busy. Save your money and redo the whole thing in a few year's time.

Thanknyou everyone for the ideas! especially with the visualization, seeing those changes really helps! @acm how did you add paint to the picitre? i would love to try this out with other rooms in the house :)

I paint things using Photoshop Elements Editor. Not the simplest route, but lets me do a ton of other stuff too. There are paint brands that have Visualizers -- you upload a photo and pick this or that paint color and it paints your walls. Photoshop doesn't limit my paint colors. :)

If your budget doesn't allow a complete renovation, perhaps you can get a new corian countertop in white with an undermount sink and new widespread faucet. If a new vanity isn't in the picture right now, consider painting the current one a bright navy color, which will look great with a white countertop. As others have said, a white textured shower curtain and white window treatment, maybe with a navy border, and some fresh art will also help.

On the other hand, you could also just embrace the 60s retro look until you are able to do a complete renovation of the room. Make it look fun and intentional with your accessories, art, etc.

The least expensive idea is @acm’s - paint the walls the same blue as the tiles and buy a white curtain (or a white-with-blue-border) for the tub.

Next level of expense is the vanity. I would get rid of the whole thing and buy either a navy with white one or a white one. But it’s possible that anything new that is white will make your old white tiles look dingy, so navy-vanity-white-countertop is another option.

Third level of expense is to save your money for a compete renovation of this room. If your house has other rooms that echo this era, you can certainly embrace it and retain its original charm. But I’m always hard pressed to love a ceramic tile countertop.

Good advice above - I would be afraid a new counter would make the other tile look dingy in comparison- if it were me I would go with the fabulous wallpaper, white/cream shower curtain with navy detail (something cottage-y like ball fringe - I would either do a double wide custom curtain or have two so it looks full and not anemic when hanging), frame the mirror, and change the vanity light - I think there is something super charming about the bath:)

ETA - I would be tempted by this print and painting the vanity soft black since it needs to work with the blue floor

The ORIGINAL Dupont Corian, with an under mount vitreous china sink?

That will not make the biscuit tile /toilet look dingy! There are "whites"! that are not screaming white. Not Quartz.......the original ! Ditch that ceramic, in any scenario, for Bisque, Bone, Cameo

    You can order samples

The more blue you remove in that bath? The better it will look: )

IMO the dilemma staed is useless . What are you planning for the sapce , a complete redo, or you want to keep the tile and do something else . I think we need info if we are to even hazard a guess at what to do.
