That is a strange place for a ceiling fixture, but you can have an electrician move the junction box to the center of the space and get something more attractive. If the ceiling is 8' get a flush or semi-flush fixture. It shouldn't hang lower than 7'. I would put a console table on the longer side wall with the mirror and some other decor. Art on the opposite wall. While this is a common setup in a foyer, it is so because it works, and shouldn't require a lot of money for a space that doesn't see much action.

It really depends on how much money you want to spend at this point. I’d remove the hanging light, but that does mean repairing and painting the ceiling. If you are already painting, changing the wall color might help you like the space a bit more. If in budget, a runner and console/lamp under your mirror (try Marketplace) should do the trick.

When reconfiguring the outside next year and making that your entrance is when I’d put more effort/budget into changes.

So we already repainted (and I already messed up a portion of the wall with Halloween decorations but I digress) so I don’t want to move the light but I was thinking of a single pendant light to hang down over a buffet/console/bookcase with offset to the mirror which could hang over the middle. I was also thinking a small bench with artwork above it for the opposite wall. What I really don’t know what to do with are the side windows of the door as I’m not a big fan of the drapes but I like the privacy (to be fair we are set a good ways back from the road but still) I like the idea of a runner but feel that’s just another place for my cats to barf on when the tile/hard flooring is right there

I just came across this photo on another thread and thought the minimal decor would suit your entry nicely. Picture it on the right side with a new pendant light.

Maybe a privacy film on your sidelights would work instead of drapes. Decorativefilm.com is a good place to start. You may find something that complements the mirror.

Decorative privacy film on the windows. (They make nice stuff these days.) Indoor-outdoor rug that you can hose off the cat yak. (Yep, they make ones that look good even inside.) A slender console on the light side of the room. (Room and Board has a ton of different sizes.) I don't know your style or what compliments the rest of your home to suggest a specific light. Just google swag light and you will find many that get you out of the 70's.

The pendant, or anything to replace it is not worthwhile and will look as ........not good

Call an electrician. Die the electrical box at the main circuit box. Get a cover plate for the ceiling and ignore it

Get a shallow console, a durable entry rug, 3 x 5 ', or 2'6" x 6' indoor, outdoor that can be washed. even bleached. Buy a nice lamp for the console, hang the mirror. Done.

The receptacle to plug in a lamp is right there.

Nothing wrong with sheers on the side light....in the right length. Those are a bit short. Or have regular panels hemmed at the other end and shirr on the same rods.

I would consider finding a or paiting the chain light so it disappears more, getting a beautiful but lghtweight shade and adding a hook to the center of the area. The current hook could easily be removed and a small patch repair, ir painted white to minimize it.

You could also hang art on that wall and replace the light with a small track light to wash the wall and light up up the art. This is a shade from Ikea

Hi, I love the mirror it look really beautiful so I definitely suggest using it in this foyer. I agree with comments about putting in a console and I would put the mirror above it. I understand that this foyer is not frequently used but a console is in my opinion a good option, adding a nice large vase that goes well with your mirror. I also feel that this light is weirdly placed in this space however for some reason I don't hate the light itself you don't see a lot of those these days but I guess it's an acquired taste you can maybe even put the console and the mirror on that wall so it doesn't look as out of place as it does now. However if you hate it you should remove it. Good luck with the project, I am sure it will look amazing in the end with this mirror!

So I measured the space and it’s 9’ x 7’ or at least the space I’m interested in is - with 8’ ceilings- here’s a couple of photos of what you looking into the foyer from the living room and coming ‘in’ from the front door. If you head straight you would have a closet on the right side before heading into what used to be the dining room but now is a tv room (and yes, I know I need a new light fixture for this room as well but that’s another decision for a later date)
