Not sure velvet is practical for a small child. And you would have to vacuum the tufted headboard. I think all wood might be better. Easier to keep clean.

Wear is the only concern I'd have--otherwise it is okay. I think it depends on the household. If the child does his coloring in another room and doesn't take food into his room, it should hold up.

It will probably be out of style before he is old enough to need a bed that large though.
