Monster’s wanted

I am making a list of ramblers suitable to climb large trees. I need them to be disease resistant specially to blackspot if possible. Once bloomers are expected as rebloomers like Mel’s heritage are probably pretty rare. I want them to be large and vigorous, no divas allowed. I will work hard to water them on their first couple of years but after that they need to thrive on their own as much as possible. We get around 50 inches of water a year here so I am hopping that should be enough for most ramblers except during very dry spells.

Currently in my possession:

Mel’s heritage

Peggy Martin

Super Dorothy

Súper excelsa

MAC

Guirlande d’Amour

After searching old threads I found I want to try:

Alberic Barbie’s

Francois juranville

Albertine

Paul’s Himalayan

To grow on places like this one

thank you!

I can't personally recommend anything as our climates are so different but I would suggest watching this lovely video, full of beautiful ramblers and other roses grown in humid NY no-spray. I've watched it several times!

Ohh wow Vapor that is perfection. I have always loved that romantic balustrade and hope to one make one somehow (just like out of castle). Your Ghislaine is fantastic. Going out to the farm right now to find it a place. Then going to buy some sort of fencing to protect it from the deer.

Oursteelers I actually have debutante pulled out on my phone and was considering it. I am really going to try and get Francois from Palatine and Maybe debutante or Spectabilis. Spectabilis is definitely my style of rambler with those tiny full blooms in several shades of blush.

Sheila so great to hear that those roses are doing great for you. I can’t wait to try them. I was so excited to see FJ at Palatine, multiflora rootstock seems to do better here than the Dr. I have always wanted to try the Lady banks and I may finally see what happens. I find stuff saying it is rated to 6b or 7b but I actually do not know anyone growing it north of Birmingham here which is 8. We are supposed to be 7b but our northwest corner and altitude certainly behaves like a 7a instead. I see it around here at Lowe’s so I may just give it a shot anyway.

Vapor I can’t get over how gorgeous your Ghislaine looks. Does it have full sun there? Does it rebloom? A lot of places say it does while others say it doesn’t.

Vapor, you may have mentioned this before, but I don't remember. It looks like Ghislane is growing in quite a bit of shade. Is it? How many hours of sun (approx.) does it get? The blooms seem to be plentiful.

I will write more about GDF and shade in a file and copy it here. However, I wanted to post some pictures of CPC. This rose is phenomenals as some of itself around the tree and holds itself to them with it's tiny spine. I have also found it re blooming in the fall so well not as large Perfusion of blooms It is still an unexpected delight. We have a similar amount of rain. This rose gets fairly good son but not full sun. It is shaded by the brick wall. It doesn't seem to hurt it any. I know freedom gardens has this rose and a couple others but I could try tip rooting it If you want. This is how another garden web member Cloned it for me for me.

Please note in the pictures that the tree to the right had to be disenabled from its canes as it pulled it over ! I thought if I grew them up together it would be better but the far outgrow the corners moss Hornos moss. Cornas M.. I trained it To the tree next to it.oss

Hey Di! A while back you posted a video of a garden tour of a man who had tons of roses. He was being interviewed by Summer Rayne. I was particularly taken with his Lykkefund. That might be an option for you? I have zero experience with ramblers, but his specimen was exceptionally impressive.

How about Fortune's Double Yellow? HMF says it can get to 39+ ft !! Jaqueline posts photos of hers and some growing wild around her area of Calif. and its drop dead gorgeous! Its is listed as China, Hybrid Gigantea, Hybrid Noisette cross.. but I have no clue exactly how black spot resistant it may be in the Deep South. Its so pretty I dont care if it black spots.

I got it to grow wild around my ponds lol

I want it to bloom up in the trees and it would be cool if I can get it to go up the Tall Pond Cypress Trees in the swamp. .

Mine are still small though. I start them out in pots for a year when they are small, then plant in the ground.

Dianela, I have long admired 'Fortune's Double Yellow' but have been reluctant to try it because other sources have claimed it was hardy only to zone 8. Granted, this was a very long time ago and so many things (such as zone locations) have changed. Maybe this will do just fine for you. If you decide to go with it, I hope you'll let us know how it fairs for you.

"I have long admired 'Fortune's Double Yellow' but have been reluctant to try it because other sources have claimed it was hardy only to zone 8."

USDA 8b and only in a protected location where it rarely ever freezes! 'Fortune's Double Yellow' grew ok here (USDA8a, now 8b) for a few years in a greenhouse, but it was damaged every time there was a freeze that went below 28F. It was killed outright by a freeze that went to 22F, so I never tried it again.

This is a rose that absolutely requires a mild climate where freezing is a rare event. It likes things HOT. It's a great rose for SoCal. The only really spectacular specimen I saw in person was in Fresno.

Vapor I sent you a PM and hopefully you are able to reply if not I can try and see where that button is supposed to be. I don’t think anyone has tried to PM me before so I had no idea.

Paul thank you for giving us that info so that is completely off the list. My beautiful Mel’s babies have been planted and fenced in to protect them from the deer until they can reach a good height. They are so incredible that they bloomed as little bands after I got them. My Golden Century actually gave me a tiny perfect bloom also. Thank you!

Paul - I agree with you, but for some reason HMF has both FDY and Yellow Lady Banks hardy to zone 6b. I did not think that could be true, and it is unfortunate. I feel so lucky that both of them grow here very well, and in our neighborhood (recently changed to zone 10a), they grow in local parks with no care, and in vacant lots, and up street trees.

Here are pics of YLB growing up our house, and FDY growing over several trees in a small park nearby (it was actually twice as wide, taking up 2 more trees, but when I took a pic of all of it the blooms were too small to appreciate.

Karen thank you for the heads up.

Thank you I actually been suspecting for a while that the 7b may not accurately describe our winter temps here. If you enter my zip code the internet produces a 7b but this map from proven winners clearly shows my 7a covering where I live as the pink seeps into northern alabama. I think this is more accurate as we get down to zero frequently here.

    Glorious Jackie!

I mentioned on this post I may give Lady Banks a tried but I have never seen anyone successfully growing it north of Birmingham which means i definitely do not think 6b would work. I may give it a try next year and report back if I am able to push it to grow here.

Here, Lady Banks yellow can suffer ill timed Spring frosts, dianela, so I agree zone 6 is really off base. The white is even less hardy.

dianela7analabama thanked Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
  • 2 years ago

@dianela I have 'Yellow Lady Banks' here in our USDA 8 garden, and because we still get freezes here that go down to 20F on rare occasions, it has never exceeded 4 feet (usually one or two sad canes) and has not flowered since the year we planted it (2001).

@jacqueline9CA I don't know why there is so much erroneous zone information on HMF in regard to a number of the tender heirloom roses. There's no way 'Fortune's Double Yellow' would last a single winter in USDA 6!

I agree, Paul. We have one FDY growing in our garden now. It is a cutting I rooted from the one I posted a pic of above. The only place I had for a rose which I was hoping would get huge was next to a tree, in a spot where it would get sun only if it climbed up for quite a distance. Now it is growing all along the top of the fence near that tree. I thought it was about 8-10 feet tall and 15 feet wide. To my delight, last week our gardeners found a cane of it growing 25 ft up the tree! They were pruning the (not loved but large privet) tree to get more light into the new fenced garden, and found that cane and another one had climbed up the tree by themselves. They very carefully tied the canes up to the privet tree, after pruning the tree substantially. I am so looking forward to next Spring's bloom! Beyond the privet tree there is a huge (12 ft high by 15 ft wide by 30 ft deep) bush, so if it wants to grow over the top of that after it eats the privet tree, that would be fine with me. Now that we can't grow roses on our house (Fire Dept), I am happy to find another place to "go vertical" with roses -

HMF does not simply say zone 6, it says 6b - 9b (default). I believe it's what gets put on there when definitive zone info has not been entered, so if you see the "6b - 9b (default)" just disregard the zone info completely because it doesn't mean anything. I don't know why the website does that, it's dumb.

So sorry I didnt realize FDY was only for 8b and up. I was assuming it was hardier due to hmf's plant zone rating. I agree that it confusing. Also, I had left my 2 little baby FDY outside in 1 gallon pots, here last winter, unprotected. It got down to the teens F several times last winter. We had a very unusually cold winter. Anywho, the 2 FDY did not freeze at all. I had a lot of stuff like normally hardy gardenias freeze to the ground!

However, I would err on the side of caution and go with the 8b rating for FDY. I wish they would change that on hmf.

I am in the upper FL Panhandle which is an 8b but since the zones just bumped me up to a 9a lol..I left my old zone after my sign in name as a 9a.

I love Mel's Heritage. I got one last spring and it has grown 9ft and is way out of control. I have decided to move it to the front of my barn and let it sprawl up the front and over it. It blooms constantly!

Amazing thing today - we saw a fully open bloom on a bush of Fortune's Double Yellow (a once bloomer) which is growing in full sun, and is kept about 10ft by 8ft on the lot where the Fire Dept. and Police Dept. are in the small town of Ross. I don't really think it is about to start its Spring bloom, but it was so fun to see an errant flower pop out.

    Hi Dianela

Have you tried Red Eden? A lady that grows roses no-spray in Alabama did a great video on it (Below) Looks terrific , she says she gets 4-5 good flushes which I think is amazing for a climber.
I bought a young plant this spring and have been very happy with it…between the good repeat and the extremely long lasting bloom , it is almost always in color, and fragrance is decent.

Oh, my apologies! Giant ramblers. Oof, all I saw was "giant".

'Albertine' is a beauty and can build size rapidly. I'm afraid I might be a touch too cold, but... It's only two years old in these pics.
