If you plan to redo the kitchen in the future with sz/miele columns, both the products you linked (fp and Frigidaire) are too short and too wide to retrofit later with sz/miele- are you planning on redoing the cabinetry in the future when you switch?

They’re going to be located at the end of the kitchen “L”. My plan is to make sure there is enough room for the columns, and then trim the smaller units in. Good question!

Usually columns are 24/30/36 inches wide and 80 to 84 inches tall. Using the end of the L will solve the width problem but not the height one (unless you have no cabinets above).

Regarding the products themselves I don’t have direct experience but the Frigidaire will likely be easier to get service/parts. Whirlpool also makes a sidekick pair that are slightly cheaper if I recall. You could also get a pair of reversible door bottom freezer units and a trim kit , this would avoid the frequently cited problem of one of the units dying after the pair have been discontinued.

Also besides sz/miele you may want to keep an eye on Jenn air, they recently announced a “slimtech” innovation to make higher capacity columns that should be on market next year.

Good information! My sales guy recommended against the Whirlpool, he said they've serviced a ridiculous amount of the units they sold. He showed me that he could order them, but he doesn't recommend. I would like to someday go with 36" columns. I am short, so I will not be putting anything above the units, just a cabinet front.

I did think about getting cheaper bottom freezer units, I can't find any information on how to pair them. Or would it just be that you leave the units 1/4" apart?
