Dining and Living Room Lighting

We have a new townhouse and want to do some renovations to add recessed and pendant lighting throughout the living room, kitchen and dining areas. Our ceilings are 9’ high and we have some bulkheads along the wall which may or may not make the lighting scheme more complex.

There’s a few questions we need help answering:

  1. How do we lay out the recessed lighting? Some sources are saying to space the lighting out at half the height of the ceiling (4.5’), but other sources are recommending the lights be placed much closer.
  2. For the living room area, should we add pendant lighting, maybe in the couch area? Or is recessed lighting throughout the space okay?
  3. We have some art pieces on the dining room wall (40” x 60”) and living room wall (2 pieces side by side, both 36” x 48”, oriented in portrait). All pieces are canvas prints with no glass. What is recommended for highlighting these pieces?
  4. What temperature of light is recommended? Should it be the same in the kitchen and living room?
