Kay - would you recommend open shelves on the right side?

Is the plumbing going in there as well? If not, I would have considered a floating shelf. It may be very difficult to clean around that tub.

I would also suggest you sit in there and see how that height feels. Are you going to use a neck pillow? or burn candles? I wouldn't want it too low.

If you keep it, I would run it all the way across but maybe have a niche in it so you can have some baskets for your tub things - bath bombs, oils, etc.

Why not a little piece of furniture- a small brass and glass table, wood nightstand, little cocktail table… seems cheaper and more flexible.

You could do open shelves on the right and then roll up your towels and put them on the shelves.

I don't see shelves over the tub ever a good idea. How do you reach them when bathing?

I like Hallet's idea of a small table instead of the ledge. Something low and easy to reach.

It may not be to code to have an outlet within two feet of the tub. Something plugged in there could definitely fall into the tub!

I put a little martini table next the tub—it was beautiful and quite functional. It worked best when placed about 1/3 to 1/2 of the tub length from the head. Then my BIL made a beautiful board which I never thought I wanted but works even better than the table and it is also beautiful in a different way. Everything on it is easy to reach.

Amy - How does that window open, how do you clean it, and does having a built in ledge there make window access or side of tub for cleaning access more difficult? I think the built in makes things kind of tight and cluttered feeling.

I too would prefer a a tray that stretches across the tub. If that is not enough then get a stool or martini table to your liking that you keep in the corner and pull out for bath time. Both come in so many different styles.

I’m going to be facing the same situation with my standalone tub. What I had planned to do is get a large rag or a mop head and tie it to a rope. I’d drop the soapy wet rag on one side and pull it through the tight area with the rope. Imagine the dust bunnies and the hair tumbleweeds otherwise.

If I do keep the ledge there is about 2.5 inches between lots tub and ledge, so cleaning isn’t too much of an issue.

Sorry, but the problem is that it's just a tub in a space that is too small for it. I'd think of something to make it more interesting in that corner. Where is the hardware? It might liven things up. Hold off on the shelf until you add the hardware.

While the ledge doesn’t bother me and I think it would work well for plants etc (all the way across), it will not work for book, iPad, drink etc. I have a wooden shelf/tray across the tub and use a small, separate little table for products, which usually sits between tub and shower and holds a candle or plant….much easier to reach than the faraway ledge when you’re submerged in your bath.
