I believe shaker is a great go-between traditional and modern styles.
The recessed panel is still a nod to traditional, while the lack of embellishments nods toward the contemporary.
You can dress them up and dress them down with colors, finishes and hardware.

Sorry, I cannot really advise on a white for you since we don't really know your house, your style, your kitchen...etc. I think you should try several options by actually painting swatches of the colors IN your kitchen. Never pick a white off a sample chip, there are always tones!

My house has high ceiling with open beams, a ittle bit Tahoe house style but smaller. I painted the house navajo white based on the suggestions from my painter. Personally I like clean cool colors and contemporary style. Somehow I never care much for the wood tones. Having open beams and wood floor is enough for me.
I always wanted all my furniture white or off white. I'm thinking of some warmer tone of white for my kitchen. Is vanilla generally darker than ivory?
