The biggest tile I would do is 12x24.

I just repeated tile I used in Florida for a hall bath. This bathroom is much smaller but the 12x 24 still works.

I just looked at the Orion. Are getting it from Floor and Decor?

I dislike the tile i chose on my own for my bathroom. i highly recommend going to Devon Tile for some expert help. Their tile is gorgeous and perhaps a bit pricy but they are worth the help.

Right now, small tiles on shower floors are very trendy. But as someone who has had to clean the grout on a shower floor for 30 years, I think fewer grout lines are nicer. You have to be absolutely sure, though that your tile is not slippery, and is certified for floor use. Floor and Decor is not good at those certifications with their tile, as opposed to what you might see at Dal tile. (Certification might not be the correct word. However, as an example, my mom put some floor and decor tile on her outside front patio. When it rains, it is so dangerous and slippery that she had to put up a sign that said “slippery when wet.”

Be careful. I just got Hexagon tiles from Floor and Decor and there was WAY more variation in the batch than I had expected based on in-store samples and my tilers had to tear out some of the light ones and replace them with dark because I HATED how it came out.

Don't go by the contractor's suggestions, go to a tile store and look at them. Contractors and builders usually get a discount on certain tiles and charge you more. Plus it's fun looking in a tile/flooring store. :)

I';m all over the place with what I think I want....

First thing- the shower floor hex tile- it seems to come in 2 colorways with the same name. One is much more monotone and the other more varied. I do feel confident that I could hand select the sheets because the shower floor is not so huge but I hear what you all are saying, beagles.

I was suprrised as DH doesn't weigh in with much but he expressed that he would prefer a small tile for the shower floor.

As an aside, I was told that with the grout between the small tiles, slippery should not be a concern. ?

Eld, I agree about not loving that combo. Most of the selections I considered though have maybe 2 of the right sizes so it is kind of putting together.

At the moment, I am really liking the last one I posted, which is very large, and a large part of why I posted was just to see if people would be concerned that I'd lost my mind.

It's a process... I have a few others that I brough samples home of, but they are too busy.

I have looked at a few other tile stores and since nothing is really jumping out at me I figured Floor and Decor was fine. I know they have some questionable reviews, but I got my kitchen backsplash tile there (which I recognize isnt a feature that gets used) and found them very decent to work with.

Do you have any inspiration photos to reference? I like the look when the bathroom and shower floor are the same—we did that with the first hex tiles you posted. And then our shower walls are large rectangular tiles.

I really like the hex tile. It has both warmer and cooler colors in it. Do you have a preference for the bath to lean more gray or more gold? That could impact the color choice you make for your faucets.

Did you go to a tile store? I have had excellent help at different tile stores...depending on the helper. They know their stock, understand the needs for the different applications and will be able to help you select a nice combo. And yes, the grout will help prevent slippage. Consider grout color too as that can really make a difference in how the tile looks...as well as how clean it looks too.

Don't forget about your counter top too. You'll want it to work well with the other tile.

The shower floor has be be small tiles. You need those grout lines there!

Yes it is gray! This is from Happy Floors, Citrus collection, in Florida.

Floor is unpolished, walls is polished and shower floor unpolished mosaic.

In person the tiles have a nice amount of difference. I have other more colorful towels to change things up.

I tried doing what are doing and when I brought home all those separate yikes, they clashed.

I do my own tile work "and" I have 6 bathrooms in THIS house. No tile is too small to be a "pain" for the tiler, because the small tile comes glued on 12" sheets. But, if I have to cut large tiles(<18"), they bow in the middle...which is a cool look...but not maybe the wavy look YOUR going for? I'd consider todays trends...but..like others said...it needs to go with your counter and floor tiles.

Oh...and it's true the floor tile needs to be small, since it has to drain ...there's a slope. Consider slickness and marble asorbs dirt...hair dye...think about how you use your shower. Mine has a seat. Will dirty water sit on the stonework/ceramic tile? Do you want a seat? A flipout chair? An inset shelf for shampoo? A hand wand? (Dog washing?) Oh...and..no you don't need grout lines...tile butted next to tile works fine.

Avoid seconds retailers like Floor and Decor like the plague.

Are there showrooms near you? Kitchen and Bath? I found my tile at a kitchen showroom when we were actually looking at cabinetry. It helped so much to actually see it on a wall.

I really appreciate all the comments- I have my work cut out for me and I will be pushing my energy towards this. For whatever reason, as much as I have looked ( online and IRL) I haven't gotten any inspiration.

The current bathroom is so unappealing and in need of improvement and maintenance---and we've been using it for 5 years now so anything I do will be welcome...but I'd love to love it.

Usually when I do a home project I do have some inspiration photos and or things I've seen to get me going. I don't mean to say that I haven't found anything I like, but I haven't found anything that speaks to me.

I will definitely look again this weekend, refocused, digesting what you've all suggested.

I think for the floor, I'd prefer something not solid in color ( more forgiving)...

I thought there were numerous threads on here about issues with marble on shower floors. I believe it is the fact that they hold moisture and discolor?

I'll look and see if I can find some of them-wish me luck with that! I searched "marble shower floor issues" and got several pages of results here. You might want to look at some of them. Hopefully an expert will weigh in here.

I have bought flooring and tiles for two baths at Floor and Decor. They have great prices due to the fact that they buy in such large quantities directly from the supplier, not because they are selling seconds as far as I have found and I have researched this. I am going to buy a large amount of engineered hardwood for our basement this month as well. One bit of advice my contractor told me was to get samples of the hardwoods first because the colors online may not be exactly the same as the real thing. He was right, but I haven't noticed any difference with the ceramic and porcelain tiles. My only problem is that my DH and I don't usually agree on what to get. Ha.

BTW, I have put the hex tile on the bathroom floors and on the floor of the stall shower as well. I like it a lot. As you said, it is forgiving, the pattern is not too busy (I have plain wall and shower tiles, though), and it is not slippery. We did seal it. Good luck. I hate making these decisions because I constantly second-guess my choices. Don't worry too much. It will be beautiful.

ps . The people at Floor and Decor can be very helpful as well. It helped bc if they showed my something that I knew I didn't like, it helped me narrow my choices and clear up for myself what I really wanted.

@beaglesdoitbetter, the variation you showed in your picture would be so unacceptable to me. I can’t believe there’s that much difference from lots sold together.

If possible, draw elevations of your bathroom where you will have tiles, and then draw the tiles to scale to see whether you like the size/proportion. The 12x24 tiles are very common and should work well, but I would be interested in seeing how the 15x30 tiles would fit.

I put 24x24 tiles in the showers in both bathrooms in Cathedral City, and I like that size a lot. The installers told me that the larger tiles were easier to install, but each tile is a bit heavy - to me.

You can get an idea of how 12x24 tiles would look by cutting these in half. The less grout you have, the easier it is to keep the tiles clean.

@Fun2BHereI know. We are making them take it out. They've already agreed to do so without any arguing. They are fantastic tilers, but I'm not sure why they didn't catch this as an issue. I've had no other problems with them.

Here are some images that might give you ideas. I think that faux marble tiles that are heavily veined don't look as nice as those that are more subtle. Or if you go with lots of contract/veining on the floor, go simpler on the walls, as has been suggested above.

This is our bathroom, with real marble on the floor. We use the shower daily and haven't had issue with water or staining.

For floor tiles, get samples. Put them in the shower, run the water, then stand on the tile barefoot. If it is the least slippery, don't use the tile. Remember, you will have wet feet in the bathroom, so make sure the floor tile isn't slippery.

am trying to find flooring for the bathroom outside of the shower..... and wall tile for the shower. I am curious Annie- which tile is the one you paired with the hex where you say calacatta I really like that but not sure where you found it. I'd love to look at the specs. Hoping Annie sees this.

I could also easily happily use some sort of subway as originally proposed if the flooring is busy.

oh and yes, whatever floor tile I'm looking at is porcelain ( and matte not shiney not slippery for flooring)

Why not put the small hex on the floor throughout? You’ll also have a countertop material to think about. I don’t think you want too many different tiles/materials in one bathroom.

I agree with using the same tile on the floor outside the shower and the shower floor. It's a great look that visually expands the space.

I'm sure that would be very lovely-----butI wasn't picturing that small hex for the whole floor,and it's way above what Iwould be comfortable spending.

The small hex is $15 sf so for the shower floor, it's ok but for the full bathroom, it's above my price point. ( again maybe I have to rethink ...maybe if I got a low $ subway tile for the shower wall that would help but it really is above my pirce point.

Don't put cheap subway tile in your shower - it will always look cheap, and it covers a large area.
