I'd be tempted to run the door mat the other direction, close to the wall on each side. Then have a bench or some shoe storage on one side -- think about how the rain and snow will wreck your wood flooring if they all just lie there! There are some very slim storage units that make a nice entry table for outgoing mail or other small things.
