I was going to suggest the sage from your kitchen post but because all the rooms open to each other I would paint every wall the beige, no accent walls. Get a large rug for the family room with color and the use the colors from it for accent pillows, art etc.

Definitely I will paint beige. Yes there are two shelves in this space. One near the kitchen next to the fireplace with the food on it. And the other one with books on it.

After the holidays re-evaluate the use of gray and beige together (as it appears online). A warm beige to work with both types of flooring, window treatment to coordinate with the warm colors as well, even a light off white would work. paint shelving units in a deeper tone of wall beige. Then update accessories to work with the new look even adding pops of warmer, brighter colors.
