Matching mantel and frame

last year
last modified: last year

I have a white fireplace surround and mantle. I want to remove the mantle and add an old barnboard thicker mantle for contrast. it probably will not match my oak floors or picture frame /greyish wood above the mantle. Is it ok to mix woods?

Sorry but the srruond in no way will suit a barnboard mantel and it is not a FP anywhay BTW the art is hung too high and the frame can always be painted but mixing a very formal FP surround with a barboard mantel cannot be fixed.Since it is fake anyway why noy just get a new surround that worksbetter for your style.

Yes, you can mix wood tones and usually having some variety in the wood tones adds interest, but it is hard to say if the wood tones you are picking will work in your space without knowing anything more.

I don't usually pick my frames to go with the room, but what works with the art.

Can you share some pictures of your space, showing the furniture and decor?

i know its not a real fireplace but i grabbed this mantle from a house that was knocked down in Newport RI. It is from the late 1800s. I guess my question is more about what type of mantle would look nice than that little white board. maybe you can share your thoughts on a better mantle. Thanks for the comment Jennifer. And yes we picked that frame because we thought it fit the art. so now need a mantle to fit the surround. I have some thought of removing the biofuel fireplace in there now and possibly putting in an insert of somekind. I added a photo of the room. We live near the bay and have a bit of a coastal look. That wall really needed a fireplace so i ”added one” sought of. ☺️

Select a surround that is simple, farmhouse style, and traditional.

Before I would have installed the flaming contraption I would have installed an electric fireplace and at least benefited from the heat they put out.

Here are traditional, simple fireplace surrounds.

Looks like the wall color is yellow and the trim beadboard etc is a muddy color? or is it just how ot comes across on here?

Also i think the size of the art is too big and too high. Experiment with paper cutouts to get the right size.

The trim is bright white, i never thought the art was too big, but now you got me thinking. i was going to make the mantle a few inches wider, maybe that will help. is the art too big or should we add items on the mantle to fill 8n the space.

The art should come down regardless of the size. The frame color is off putting as you have a lot of white then all of a sudden theres black with nothing to relate to it. maybe the frames shoukd be gold and then have have artwork that echoes the other colors in the room.
