teacher needs help with kitchen

Any suggestions for the floor, counter and backsplash area? We just painted. It’s a pale beige (accessible beige) but we want to keep the cabinets as they are. The flooring needs to look right with the living room and kitchen. We currently have brown leather furniture and darker wood in the dining room. We have a pool and large dog, so the flooring choices need to be able to tolerate that. I am a teacher so cost friendly options are most helpful. Thank you!

is that sheet vinyl or actual tile. I was just looking at flooring options for a home office we have and there is quite a bit of product you can DIY but its not clear if you will be removing tile or just what.......If it were mine I might head to the granite area in whatever local stoneyard you have. Many of them would be suitable/ lovely for your counter and there is leathered and honed now too. Due to the long run of pretty simple neutral stained cabinets I think Id want some stone for the interest...but anyway try to think about what you would like to look at as the length of the straight runs is a potential visual to emphasize. houzz images and general web pictures of kitchens/ counters can help with a direction ....

    What is your budget?

My first thought for the floor is a LVP in a stone look.

Agree with herb about the counters. Look at something like a Typhoon Bordeaux and then a plain ceramic tile for the backsplash.

Per herbflavor's comment above, I think a part of your visual challenge is the long run of cabinets. I think you can help your eye appeal by working with the things you mentioned, floor, backsplash, and counter surfaces, but I think some minor changes to your upper cabinets will help possibly more. I think a good craftsman can remove the raised panel from a few of your upper cabinets and replace it with glass. You may not want the insides of your cabinets to show so you can do a translucent glass or curtains behind the glass but I think that would help and hopefully would be relatively inexpensive. The labor rate and the quality of the job will depend on who does the work! For the floor, I would go with something lacking clear lines. Either stagger tile, or go with a non-lined look. I personally like natural stone since I think it's less dated but you might want something with color in your backsplash. Maybe do a tile but add a brighter color tile as accent now and then. The countertops are going to be expensive, as probably will be the floor, but I htink a light Corian or quartz might help distract from the wood colors you already have in abundance.

Thanks for all the ideas. The floor is tile but the grout has seen its better days. I’m not sure what the budget is yet, just trying keep the cost low. I love the counter top idea. I don’t know much about LVP but am interested in a wood look. I love real hardwood but am not sure it’s best with the pool and large often wet dog.
We need flooring in the living room which connects. We have old carpet. I’d like the flooring on the first floor to match.

I see several black appliances so keep that in mind when you select a counter color. I personally think you can keep your black countertops, since that is an expensive item to change, and work on some other items that may achieve your end. Alternatively, perhaps change the island surface with a color that will pair well with the black.
