I love the shape of Dances with Giraffe. We grow it and can't wait until it achieves its registered height. Destined is see is so pretty, but it left the garden last season in the interest of downsizing.

I can't say enough about Delinquent Doll. It is a superb performer for the late garden. The cat at the bottom of the photo is Gus Gus, one of our new kittens. His sister's name is Jackie.

Deadliest Catch is another good performer for the late garden.

Dennis Russell has been a disappointment. It hasn't grown very well. I do like the flowers, though.

I bought Discon Inferno cheap to increase and sell later, but Bob insists we keep one piece. It is quite bright.

Dances with Giraffes is a UF that I understand why people like so much. It is very nice indeed.....Nan: I like the Derrow pink 'Delinquent Doll', and of course I agree with Bob About Disco Inferno.......As for the weather here (and possibly moving your way), we are supposed to have a big cold front move in the week after this one which will drop our temperatures down in the low single digits. This is why I can't have many tender daylilies. 107 in the summer but 6 degrees in the winter......My only D is the yellow double Dutch Yellow Truffle. It's my favorite double and will spend the winter in my garage...............Maryl

Just received 5 inches of snow Saturday night into Sunday. Now we are under a wind and flood warning Tuesday to Wednesday. It is that time of year.

Nan: I also like Deliquent Doll

DRACULA: A consistent performer year after year. Does fade a little by the afternoon.

DARK WITCH: Tallest plant after AUTUMN MINARET. A bud builder with 4 branches that are well spaced.

DANCES WITH GIRAFFES: Not my favorite color, so it left the garden this past summer.

DRAGON FANG: This photo was taken in in the PM, so the purple is not as dark.

DAVID KIRCHHOFF: An older Salter. Left the garden this past summer as well. Has been improved upon and I can't keep them all.

DOING ALL RIGHT: A Bennett intro that is slow to increase.

DRUM BOOGIE: Another Bennett intro. Need to get a better picture of it this year.

DESIRE OF NATIONS: Wonderful bloom, but slow to increase.

Dennis Russell looked pretty good here last summer--considering. It is not as tall as Glowing Quasar or as vigorous, but the height is decent and the color striking. It is hard to evaluate anything in a year such as 2023. DR has been here quite a while, directly from Rice. A garden visitor begged to buy a piece last summer; I wavered, but decided to wait. From 2023:

Diana's Evening Gown threw some ravishing blooms. Like many Waldrops, it is not particularly vigorous, but has multiplied. Scape height can vary.

The darkness of Dark Bat is difficult to capture. Recently divided. Aphids and thrips were a problem.

Deep Waters was subpar. It is an appealing flower, normally with good height. Moderate increase.

Discerning Heart is beautiful, but no verdict on performance. It was still quite short last summer.

Dawn of Aquarius looked good at the estate garden.

Darker Shade is difficult to capture before red tones show in photos. Good height and reliable bloom.

Not blooming well last year (with lots of company) were Drew Hoo, Dream Sequence (newly divided), and newly divided Deep Dark Secret.

Destined to See looked good.

Doctor Handsome is now at clump strength.

Daniel Howard Norris takes a while to recover from division.

Sherry - Your picture of Dances with Giraffes is wonderful. I like it in Nan and David's photos too.

Mantis - My favorites of yours are Diana's Evening Gown and Doctor Handsome. Daniel Howard Norris grabs me every time. I wish it were a tet.

Here are my D's:

Dearest Valentine, like most of my daylilies, had a subpar year.

Deeds Not Words was a great performer with a bud count of 20. It was one of the newer daylilies that got regularly watered in the drought of 2022.

Dance Again didn't dance much last year.

Dark Gethsemane had a few stunning blooms.

Divas in Diamonds gave the strongest performance of my Davissons.

Dancing Flamingo had a subpar year. I have two clumps, and one of them did not bloom at all.

Dr. Jules Michael Vinkman performed better than usual last year - I think because the grubs left it along.

Dolly Llama was a new one. Bud count was poor in its first year to bloom, and I was disappointed that it would not set seed and neither would its pollen. I don't think it will staying here long. I liked its shape, color, and name though.

Dearest Mahogany has not multiplied since I got it four years ago. It only bloomed on one of its three fans last year. I've tried to hybridize with it over the years, but I've never been able to set a pod and the pollen is weak too.

Desire of Nations is a beautiful bloom, but it didn't perform well for us so it left the garden.

Debra, I didn't get to see Dearest Valentine this year because it was in the crush zone. We will move all of those daylilies in that bed and rework it. I hope to see it again soon. Deeds Not Words is beautiful! Thanks for the info on Dearest Mahogany. I have considered buying it but it sounds like I should pass on it.

Nan - It is a shame Dearest Mahogany is such a dud in hybridizing. It blooms ML here, and by then it's usually too hot for pods for set. It might work better grown in a greenhouse. The club member that I split my win of Dearest Mahogany with reported that it didn't make it through the first winter in her garden. I hope Dearest Valentine will bloom well for you next year. Deeds Not Words surprised me by how well it did in its first year to bloom. I look forward to seeing how it does in 2024, I'm always tempted when I see Desire of Nations. But I do have one of its children to use in hybridizing, so I'll pass on it. Some of the Emmerichs are slow to multiply here. Kingdom Without End and Forty Days and Forty NIghts have always been slow multipliers.

I wish that Deeds Not Words were not an evergreen. Alas, I too had a bad experience with Dearest Mahogany--an inherently weak plant that has often been pictured by people, who, when contacted, can not report good growth. Desire of Nations has been an important hybridizing plant for Karol, but increase is modest (but not as modest as Soli).

I forgot an excellent performer here, Dragon Nation. Good height on this early midseason bloomer that immediately attracts viewers. Vigorous too. Not as heavily budded this year. Out of Get R Done, but more floriferous.

Desire of Nations in 2022

Mantis - I didn't know you had Dearest Mahogany. I saw it growing in a nice large clump at Blueridge Gardens. That must be its sweet spot. Dragon Nation looks impressive.

Mantis, I really like Dark Bat, both the color and form. I also like Dawn of Aquarius. Debra, Dearest Valentine and Dark Gethsemane are my faves!

Mantis, Dragon Nation looks like it will be a great performer here. It's new to the garden and I didn't get a photo of it this year though. We did put pods on it using one of our best yellow with red eye seedlings as pollen parent and got 45 seeds. It will be interesting to see its offspring.

David: I like your picture of David Kirchhoff but I understand all too well about having to thin the herd. Desire of Nations looks beautiful.....Mantis: I do like Dennis Russell, your Desire of Nations and Deep Waters as well. I don't think I have any with a chalk/washed eye. I don't know why. I like them in others garden. Diana's Evening Gown is an awefully pretty pink. From what I've seen though many Waldrop daylilies have a problem with fading during the day..........Debra: Really like the warm yellow of Dance Again in your picture. I think you've shown some clump shots of it that were wonderful. I'm very impressed with your Dark Gethsemane...........Maryl
