Induction RANGE question

I'm considering making the switch to induction when we remodel the kitchen. A range will work best in the layout. My old range recently broke down and I needed a quick replacement , so I decided to buy an inexpensive ($900) Samsung induction range to try it out to see how we like it. I must say, I've been impressed. The oven is lacking a bit, but I mostly bought it for the cooktop.


The other night I was making a beef tenderloin. I preheated the oven to 450.

When searing my tenderloin in a cast iron on the largest burner I felt the burner was lacking it's normal power.


So here is my question. When the oven is on does it decrease the output of the cooktop? My guess is yes, since the electrical requirements for a 30" stand alone cooktop (Wolf) is 40 amps. And a single wall oven (Wolf) is 30 amps. The electrical requirement for the 30" Samsung RANGE is only 40 amps. Wolf 30" induction RANGE is 50 amps. Does this mean if I go with a range I will have an underpowered cooktop when the oven is in use as well?

    DH (a retired engineer) says the total amps are only used if all burners (so to speak) and the oven are being used. In fact, even if everything is being used it's probably still not comsuming all the amps because the appliance wouldn't be designed that way to avoid flipping the breaker if everything was in use. So using one burner and the oven, even if at top temperatures, shouldn't be exceeding the capacity of the range to produce heat. However, I am not discounting your perception. Cast iron is the best type of pan to use with induction. It's possible that the largest burner itself has a limit as to how hot it will get. Digging into the specs may reveal that, or they might not. Maybe someone with more appliance knowledge here will weigh in.

    The most powerful induction element is 2400 watts (10 amps at 240 volts), so it is unlikely that this oven would affect the operation of the induction element. However induction elements are paired and may not operate at full power as described on page 29 of the user manual.

    Not an answer to your question - but I am an induction owner - i use my outdoor grill for high heat sears - I found its not a matter of power its that the induction times out at a certain temp

    The current rating of an appliance is the highest value that can be achieved with normal operation, accounting for any hob "sharing" when one of a pair is on power boost. An induction top/electric oven rated for 30A will have lower rated coils and/or hobs than one rated for 50A. The circuit breaker should be sized to the conductors used to power the appliance, and those should be rated such that the appliance doesn't continuously draw more than 80% of the rating. (Refinements on and exceptions to this generality may be found in NFPA 70.)

    I think your user manual is best able to answer that question. I have a monogram cooktop and it is zoned with two burners on each zone. It says in the manual that the power of the setting used is reduced when both burners are on. It takes a little getting used to but generally I cook more by noting how fast something is browning or boiling and adjust the burner setting accordingly.

    Thank you so much for all of your insights. I guess what made me have the perception that it was underpowered in my application is that normally I could set my cast iron on 5 or 6 on the large burner to get a decent sear if the pan was ripping hot. However, on this occasion with the oven on I had to turn it way up to 8 or 9. I was only using the 1 burner, so don't feel it was a burner sharing issue which I did notice in the user manual. And perhaps it was just my perception. I'll have to test it further.


    I was just shocked when I looked at the electrical requirements of a cooktop and wall oven it would require 70 amps combined, whereas the ranges are in the 40-50 amp range. It presented me an issue that perhaps I was overlooking when it comes to induction ranges in particular. Overall I have really been enjoying the induction cooktop experience overall. The heat control is every bit as good as gas, which is amazing. And cleaning it is an absolute dream come true. Zero issues with weird noises, although my husband says he hears a faint click at very low temperatures. I can't hear it. I assume it is the burner cycling on and off to hold a simmer.


    @deb s Oh how I wish I could do my high heat searing outdoors all the time. But when it is -8 F I just can't bring myself to push my grills that hard LOL If it weren't for our winters I would cook all of my meat on the grill, flattop or smoker. Less mess in my kitchen :-)

    You could do a test: put a pot of water on the cooktop, get the water to an constant boil, turn on the oven, and see if there is any change in the boil.

    You would need two 240 volt circuits, one for each appliance.

    @deb s - some of us on this Houzz forum have cold winter climates. It's been single digits here for several days, and I am not even in the coldest part of U.S. like Iowa or Minnesota, or in Canada.
