travertine bathroom update

We had to rip out our shower stall due to mold. I’m wondering if I should keep what I have and try to decorate around it—or rip it all out and start over. I did find some of the trim to match so that’s not a problem. Is it too outdated to try to recover? I also have to replace the floor.

While dated, it still looks to be in good shape.

If you like this room the way it is, then I would say just replace the tub surround tile when you redo the shower stall. However, it looks like you have some of this tile going behind the vanity as well. If you don't replace all of the kind of tile that is coming out of the shower stall the room will lose its cohesiveness. If you have to remove the vanity to remove the tile then it looks like you are at a 100% remodel. The mirror wall is definitely a dated look. But if you aren't prepared for this budget wise, leave the vanity and wall tile on that wall and do that part at a later date. You don't need tile on the whole wall (or half wall) behind the vanity. Chances are the floor tile goes under the vanity though.

Before you go down that path, think about whether you like the layout as this would be your opportunity to change the size or position of fixtures.

Your bathroom is remarkably similar to ours which is currently undergoing a reno. We took out the towers/mirrors and lights above the vanity, kept the base (took out the granite and replacing it with quartz and under mount sinks), removed the oversized jacuzzi tub (replacing it with a freestanding tub) and slightly expanding the shower enclosure. Also replacing the flooring. Will post pictures when it’s done. While not inexpensive, our new bathroom will much better suit us. Old fixtures, tub and towers donated to Habitat for Humanity.

I would do it all. The jacuzzi tub is dated and keeping the jets dry and mold free is a pain. The vanity area is dated as well. Not sure what your budget is but I think you would be well served to do everything.

How much money do you have to spend? Do you like your current tub and do you use it? If this mold situation hadn't happened to your bathroom, had you been considering a remodel anyway? Are there other areas of your home that take priority over this one as far as renovating?

A different color wall paint and new flooring can make this bathroom feel quite different with little effort.

No matter what, match the bulb color in the fixtures!
