That is the perfect place for guests to put bags, laptops, any number of things. We finished a guest room this year and have had 8 different sets of guests come visit. Open surfaces to put stuff down on are greatly appreciated by all. If it feels too boring to you then change the light fixture or paint the back wall, hang a small picture on the right wall.

Put that shalf at 30" from the floor add a small chair that space can then be a tiny office or with a mirror a make up space also a much nicer light .

It appears to have a cut out for a cord at the back, no? If it is too short to use as a desk, I would get shelf brackets or even blocks of wood cut to sit on top of the current shelf, lining the edges at the height that you want/need. Two on the sides and one at the back. Then have a piece of plywood cut to fit the top (measure carefully!). Slide it to sit on top of the blocks. Use the interior space as a drawer (a shallow basket?) And use the top as a desk or vanity. A mirror on the back wall? It will be a vanity. A cork board made of cork tiles…a bulletin board! Done!

Maybe put hooks on the wall and use it as a mudroom style type thing to sit and put shoes on and take a jacket off. You could easily get a small cushion to put on top so it's a bit cozier.
