Multitasking - Choosing Lights

last modified: 2 years ago

Putting aside paint colors for the nonce until I can sample them, on to lighting.

The globe pendant shown below was endorsed by my DD's and is a given.

I want two sconces over the sofa. There is currently a sconce as you enter on the left and I will put a third sconce there. I have 10 foot ceilings.

Function is a secondary, nay tertiary, concern. This is a non-primary bedroom in a non-primary home. It will see very light use and even lighter use as a BR, though the sofa is a sleeper.

Assume this as a starting point:

I've looked thru tons of lighting. I want something that skews modern and plays well with the pendant. I have gone batty looking and it seems anything interesting looks like something else to me ... bathing caps, whisk brooms, TP holders, Dali, cymbals, hockey pucks, gumballs, etc. etc. Here are 15 I've considered.

Here's what is there now. I think the sconce is very cool, but do not plan to use it, and I am not a fan of the pendant given my plans for the room..

This is going to be spectacular when it all comes together.

I lean towards the cylindrical sconce on the bottom row at far left. It's classic and understated and just all-around lovely, but it also needs to be the right size.

I like the one Ida pointed out, and top row, second from right.

I don't care for anything that is there currently. Will all three sconces be the same?

Whatever is going on with that sconce on the bottom row, far right? It looks like it fainted.

    My votes:

ETA: Because of you, I was looking up ceiling lights (before you decided on the one up above) … and now I want this really bad for my laundry room.

Oh Jilly that is cute! Can you get by with the smaller one?

Thank you! I think so, it’s a very small room (and walk-thru to garage).

Think of how often you will pass it and enjoy it then.

I circled the ones I like for your room. In a relatively small room, with a mural on one wall and a pendant fixture, I would go very simple on the 3 sconces.

I think we should submit our receipts. 🤣

Maybe a magpie to live in the forest?

Jk, I know you want two, but I thought this was quite amazing for the right spot.

I'd lean toward something very very simple, like this one, at Home Depot of all places. HD sconce

I don't think you need to repeat the cylinder shape, or leaf-like. The top row, second from the right: its shade semi-reflects the ceiling light brass cap. Two of those above the sofa and the magpie fixture to replace the existing sconce as you enter to the left - fun and unexpected.

That's exactly what I was thinking about the magpie! And then, even more fancifully, that I could have them alighting on the mural as a way to fix the random outlets/sconces if that ended up being an issue, LOL.

The top row, second from the right: its shade semi-reflects the ceiling light brass cap.

This has been popular with a lot of people. In a mockup, i felt they were too wide. Leaning toward the one next to it, a little different, clearly modern, but again repeating the brass.

That's a good one too. How wide is the one I selected?

btw, I think you should paint the ceiling the wall color in this room.

    Good idea.

BTW, apropos of nothing since I want a narrow sconce, aren't these shades cute? Matilda Goad ... think i saw here on Homeworthy.

Yes for ceiling the same color as the walls, or a slightly lighter version thereof.

Ahh yes, I follow Matilda G on Instagram. I like almost everything she posts.

    Leans towards industrial.

Bunny, ceiling painted the same color will appear a tad lighter anyway.

I like Matilda Goad’s brass pleated lamp shades, too. I was disappointed to find that her floor lamp is only available with a UK plug. I’m sure it could be re-wired, but I don’t love it that much.

Allison, in my house it depends on the time of day. But I love the enveloping-ness of an unbroken color.

I like the 3rd from last on the bottom row. Something about it is just unusual and cool and not too big. Next choice is the top row, next to last. I just noticed Jilly and Sueb also selected that one as part of their choices.

If you are doing art on the wall, what about sconces painted the wall color.

I like the pop of brass. The art shown is just a quick mockup using an Etsy "gallery wall" set of prints. It was the easiest way to drop something in.

I think the sconces need to be skinny, like JLC's etc because the sofa is only 78" wide. And tall because of the ceiling height.

What is the purpose/function of the sconces? Will they be the reading lights for the sofa bed when you have guests, or will you have lamps, too? Will people be able to turn them on and off from bed or have to get up to the entry to shut them off?

Function is a secondary, nay tertiary, concern. This is a non-primary bedroom in a non-primary home. It will see very light use and even lighter use as a BR, though the sofa is a sleeper.

Thanks, I saw that, but wondered what the actual experience of guests might be. Sounds like there may be none or if there are, they'll just figure it out?

Okay, since you insist. : )

I plan to use a fade switch for the sconces (at least that is what I call them) wherever it is easy to put it. If that cannot be reached while in bed, at least one has light for a few seconds on the way back to bed. However, IME people use their phones for that, and, people who read in bed are usually on a device that has its own light.

And back to usage, the most likely guest would be our immediate family or, if my kids are using the place, their friends. It is not private enough for say, our adult friends IMHO. I understand that for lots of people in lots of situations function is really important but it just is not in this case.

Over a decade ago, someone here (maybe KSWL) posted a long list of must-haves for a guest room and bath. I followed the list to a T for my guestroom in Maine. Years later, I have had to throw a lot of it out because people never used it. I stopped putting out certain things, and I took the fluffy terry robes back for me and DH. Most adults don't like being overnight guests and they try to use as little as possible and impose as little as possible. Bottled water and extra chargers are the biggest exception!

I'm a Luddite; what can I say, lol. Was not my intent to insist, just trying to imagine how it would function. You know your guests and usage best!

I have also put out terry robes in the guest room…and no one ever uses them!

I like the first light on the right on the top row. I have a thing about wanting lampshades that diffuse light instead of blocking it. 🫤

    BBSTX,

It's funny I only recently gave up on getting guests to use them and took them for us. They are so nice!

I'm confused; isn't there a "first light on the left" and a "last light on the right?"

Back to guests. We have friends in Maine who have an old house like us and, until recently, it had one bathroom to five bedrooms. And the bedrooms are all very close to each other, not like newer homes where people take pains to have hallways or some separation for the primary BR. They have lots of guests (middle aged couples) all summer. Most people I know would not be comfortable with that, so hat's off to them!

Duh! I meant the first one on the left.

I have one guest room upstairs and it has an en suite bathroom. For the guest room downstairs, it is literally about 3 steps from the bedroom door to the bathroom door. I put the robes in that room thinking that my guests may want to move between the 2 rooms without being full-dressed. Apparently not.

    This one gets my vote.

Teeda, I am leaning toward an all brass option and that is a strong contender for its height (10' ceilings) and its slender-ness ... slenderity... slendocity. Because it is not terribly wide. The sofa is only 78" wide.

BBSTX, It was initially a fave too.

I like the alabaster base (if you'd call that the base). I decided against it because I am a total convert to adding modern elements to give a room a sort of, kick. There are only a few places to do that in this small room, so the job falls to the lighting and area rug, pretty much. This felt maybe a little too feminine and bathroom-y.
