Well assuming I can spend the million dollars on more land for my Hosta since that's what I really need, I'd spend it somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the rest at Solberg's Green Hill Farms Hostas (or maybe just buy him out). So, not very long at all.

I suppose the plant is bigger here, but the leaf size is smaller.

That dog is too funny! I had lots of Revolution seedlings and they really are a good looking reversion. Beautiful Beth and Steve! I had Robert Frost but it died in its pot before I got it planted. I do like that Ruffed Up.

Rare Breed, a favorite of mine. Such pretty leaves on this one.

'Revolution' and, as you can see, it's quite unstable. There's a green SPORT -no, that's NOT a reversion- and that happens quite frequently for me. I grow them on since they do make an impressive looking plant, with moderately cupped, nearly rounded leaves and vigorous growth. I give it the garden name "Green Revolution" and I have several of them.

"Green Revolution".

This is an interesting combination. In the back, peeking out in the top right corner you'll find 'Risky Business' and 'Revolution' is in the bottom right of course. The green sports you see are "Green Revolution" on the left and "Outta Business" in the middle. As you might have guessed, "Outta Business" is the green sport out of 'Risky Business".

Now, you ask 'why are these sports on not reversions', and the answer lies in the answer itself: a reversion means it reverts back to what it came from which in both cases is from variegated plants. In the case of 'Revolution', it came out of 'Loyalist', which came out of 'Patriot' which came out of 'Francee' which is a 'Fortunei' sport but it is not recorded which variety of 'Fortunei' we're dealing with although it's a reasonable assumption that it's 'Fortunei Hyacinthina'. In the case of 'Risky Business', that came out of 'Striptease' which came out of 'Gold Standard' which came out of 'Fortunei Hyacinthina'. You're right quite the family tree!

'Risky Business', and if you look closely the leaf at the 5 o'clock position is showing signs of reversion!

Debra, the simplest way to look up a hosta cultivar's heritage is to use Hugo's database, great resource! Look up the variety you have and work your way back from there. Just for fun, use the comparison routine I maintain and try to put up 'Fortunei' and 'Fortunei Hyacinthina' side by side: you'll find there's no images in the HL for 'Fortunei', hence the comment I made with respect to the assumption of the 'Fortunei' variety in question actually being 'Fortunei Hyacinthina'.

Rare Breed is indeed a rare breed and something I look for in all the medio variegated Hosta I buy, so while you're sharing . . .

Back to the million dollars - I think I would set up my own Hosta importing business so I could import all those fantastic Hosta from Holland and Valley's so I could finally get my hands on those nearly-impossible-to-find Hosta. Oh, I suppose I might offer some to you guys too. ;^}

Wow, a million dollars to spend on hosta! That would be a dream! Now if it were just to be used for buying hosta, then I think that money would last me my lifetime. But I would have to share some of that money because I know that giving the money to hosta enthusiasts would make them so happy.

But I would really want to move to a better home with a bigger and better suited garden for hosta. I am tired of dealing with maple roots. I want no maple trees on my property or even the neighbor's property!

Beth and Debra, your pretty Robert Frost hosta are making me rethink my plan for Robert Frost. I gave Robert Frost one of my prime planting places and it didn't do well last year. It had drawstring. So this winter I am thinking that it had it's chance. I should remove it and give that nice spot to another hosta. But after seeing your pictures, maybe I will give it one more year. I do have a smaller Robert Frost in another part of my garden (a division of the same hosta) and it did well. Go figure!

Robert Frost is one of my first hostas. I planted it right next to a Maple tree before I learned the maple tree roots take all the water and invade the hosta plant. I am sure it would do better in another spot but each year it does fine. Doesn't get bigger but until it starts shrinking, I will leave it alone, after all we need plants for those challenging areas.

Beth, I never heard of “drawstring edges” before…. I will have to check that out online. Thanks for the RF compliment. That is an old, old, Hosta. I think it was one of the few that were already here when we bought the house. That and Elegans.

Debra this is what drawstring is:

• Drawstring A hosta problem where the edge (usually light-colored) of the leaf grows more slowly than the center, making the leaf cup and eventually tear around the edge (think of an elastic shower cap).
