I imagine you can take out those fluorescent panels (?) and replace with drywall and a cute small chandelier or semi-flush fixture. Maybe look for that first, and use it as a guide in choosing finish and/or look for cabinet hardware. I like the idea of semiflush to keep from blocking the view.

You could try removing the current panels that are above the eating nook, putting up drywall, and then getting a small fixture to go over the table. Below are some ideas from a few dining areas and breakfast nooks we have done for clients:
