Because you have a sink on the peninsula, it would probably be better to keep the upper level so you have a backsplash for the sink. The peninsula is not deep enough to be without one.

I have a similar situation in my vacation home and I'm glad we have the higher counter there. It's probably only about 6-8 inches deep and not only does it contain the water/splashing, but it hides the kitchen clutter from the dining area.

I think your stone is beautiful, so definitely doesn't need an "update" but of course if you just want a change, that's a different matter.

if it were mine, I would start by painting the Island Base cabinet a dark color... something from the granite, Urbane Bronze possibly. a new light fixture?

I agree with above, because of the sink it is wise to keep it the way it is.

Your counters, which are lovely by the way…read black and white to me. What reads brownish are your paint color, your flooring, and your seat cushions. I would also look at your lighting. If you want less “brown,” then go for daylight bulbs. Then assess. But I think your counters aren’t the issue.

Thanks for the tips. I do love the countertops but have outgrown it and just want a more clean modern look. They are mixed with a variety of colors but with more brown undertones. I’ll keep the peninsula the way it is and see what else I can change to update our kitchen. Thanks.

I would leave the granite on the island, and find a coordinating quartz to put around the outer countertops. I agree that you need a different light fixture over the island. I would suggest something lower, and wider.

and I can see why you would tire of it and want something new and fresjer looking. Very goof point made below about keeping the upper counter behind the sink.

IMO quartz is down gradr form real stone. I think until you are ready for a complete redo leave all as is . Please do not mix fake and real stone in the same space All your base cabinets should be drawers , you need a proper hood over the range . Your cabinets are either two colors or your lighting is all off so try changing all th bulbs in the kitchen to LED 4000K Change the tile for the backsplash to a glass tile in a color from the granite add a black bowl on the island . Myabe even a blck glass tile for a backspalsh / So more interesting stools . For any more help we need to see the whole kitchen but from waht I can see there are issues that can only be fixed with a redo so until then just play a little with what you have.

You sound like a trendier. The higher wall near the sink is late 90s; early 2000. I would take it down. I don’t think you would have problems with water (?) spilling over. Houzz has new statistics for 2024 just posted that most homeowners are going with quartz. I had quartz since 2003 (started with Cambria); I think it is amazing especially the maintenance free. (Although a few have mentioned there are different grades of quartz). Lastly, I hope you can sell your granite. It’s pretty but I get it. I would hate something that beautiful in a landfill… right?

That’s a good idea to change the backsplash. I’ll definitely consider that. Several of you mentioned changing the stools. What type of stool should I get (pics)? And recommendations on light fixtures above the island?

You are aware that natural woods, creams and browns are re entering the window of popular design trends, right? In that respect…your colors are perfect! I would sit back and think about what kind of changes you might engage in that wouldn’t end up with a complete re-do. Yes to considering more interesting counter stools. Perhaps ones with a slightly coastal feel with rattan? Think Serena and Lily. Change up your “decor” in the area. Perhaps consider a new backsplash. While others here will point out your “need” for drawers vs. doors on cabinets, or a lower counter top behind your sink…do YOU want that? Your kitchen, as it stands right now, is lovely. And appears functional. Sometimes small changes can make a world of difference.

Better photo of what light you have over the island? One pendant or two? Hard to tell.

I don't blame you for wanting to change the speckled granite.

Consider honed Jet Mist--it's real granite, black with white swirls. Beautiful with white cabinets and dark hardware. Or you could use soapstone. Then select an interesting tile for the backsplash--it's a small area so you wouldn't need too much.
