why are you digging in winter in z6??

i suppose your grounds not frozen.. like mine.. so why not.. eh ???

i presume the plant is in full dormancy ... so its not going to grow roots until it comes out of dormancy ....

as such.. i would pot it.. and put it in full shade .... so its stays dormant as long as possible ... and perhaps can grow a few roots before you slowly it back into sun ..

i might also consider cutting the leaves back half or so.. to reduce water usage until it grows roots ..

if it survives.. it should look good next year.. or the year after ...

It was 60 degrees yesterday in Pittsburgh. It was from a friend's long lost garden who passed away and I rescued it before it was destroyed like the rest of the garden...so timing is everything even if it's winter.
