No to a valance for a few reasons. Drapes will warm up the room and help offset the empty walls and create a more balanced feel. Consider the effect of what you choose color wise and if you want to duplicate those colors in the room, or go with a neutral so accessories can be more easily changed when your taste changes.

Make sure you have safe clearance between drapes and baseboard heat. You may need a longer bracket . Since only one window, hang drapes to stack outside window when open.

You will need to move the sofa further away from the wall.

I would use curtain panels hung by rings on a rod. Alternately you could use a flat or box-pleated valance with panels underneath.

I like Lyn's idea of a pretty pattern to warm up the room. Find something that has your colors in it, usually a floral or Jacobean design will have multiple colors.

What are you going to do to fix that ceiling? That pattern is not attractive IMO. Not only that but take away the torchere. It shines on the ceiling and the quality of light is not attractive. Change to an arched floor lamp.

Uggg do not I mean DO NOT hang your curtains from the ceiling. Your window is all wrong for it. The only time that trick works is if you have a valance to hide the fact that there is two feet of wall between the window and ceiling!!! I would just get a panel or two for each side of the window. Frame it. They never need to close so why waste the money. If I had money I would toss the shades. Shades are universally a bad look.

I don't see where anyone suggested hanging the curtains from the ceiling. Hanging them higher than the window casing just under the crown molding is a perfectly acceptable way to mount curtains.

We definitely think some curtains, hung high, should help the space a lot. You could look at doing simple panels or ones with a pattern to match the colors you already have going on.
