Design Dilemma Kitchens

American Woodmark vs KraftMaid pricing?

This message is a follow-up to an earlier discussion, Home Depot/Lowes vs. Designer, https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6424533/home-depot-lowes-vs-designer#n=41.

I took everybody’s suggestions and came up with a workable design. We use painted shaker doors, drawers instead of cabinet doors, pull-out shelves wherever possible, and the like.

The designs are almost identical: close to a 95%+ match. There are the same number of drawers, cabinets, pull-outs, and the like. Home Depot used American Woodwork, while Lowes used Kraftmaid.

At this time, I need help understanding the significant price gap between the two: $7,000. This is after all “discounts” and the like are considered. American Woodmark is less expensive.

What question/issue am I missing? Or is American Woodmark just less expensive than Kraftmaid?

You need to check the fine print on what you are actually getting.

American Woodmark looks to be framed cabinets with upgrades that add to the cost like plywood construction. Their standard cabinets don't appear to offer full extension slides for drawers. Another upgrade.

I would not spend money on a framed cabinet. I am a frameless cabinet fan. I don't like all the additional vertical stiles that are required with framed cabinets. They take away from the size of drawers and your ability to store large items in the cabinets.

I don't have elephants inhabiting my kitchen. The sales pitch about how heavy-duty the cabinets are is lost on me. If the cabinets can hold up the sink and the counters, that's good enough for me.

You're kind of comparing a Buick to a Ford.
