Dining/Kitchen Built-ins – design input needed!

We are remodeling our kitchen/dining area (both open to one another) and would love input on these built-ins. Drywall will wrap around to enclose the cabinets on both sides (4 1/2" notation in drawing).

Currently, the plan is to go with glass doors on the uppers. We don't want this "unit" to feel heavy and thought glass doors for some depth and light would help.

Other iterations have included:

  • 2 full-width open shelves (no upper cabinets)
  • 2 solid hanging cabinets on either end with two 36" open shelves in the middle

If anyone has strong opinions or things we should consider before placing the order, I'd love to hear them!

are these frameless? Is that why you are using 36" wide instead of 39"? I don't care for the WIDE fillers....get them down to 1.5 to 3" max. If you don't have a lot to show....do the center section in glass. And add crown molding...two piece so the crown is flush with the full overlay doors.

@thekitchenplace Yes, these are frameless. We originally went with 39" wide, but we were concerned about pinching the traffic flow between this and the nearby island after deciding to wrap the drywall around the built-in. Thanks for the nudge to reconsider this; I'll do another measure!

Regarding the doors: With the center two sections in glass, would you want them opening towards each other? And the outer two solid doors would be on their own (with no interior door opening toward it)? See sketch!

Love the crown molding suggestion. TY!

What do you plan to store in the lower cabinets? Dishes, linens, other? Asking because in your lowers, drawers are handier for most items. If you need some but not all tall storage, like for a mixer, you could mix and match drawers and tall cabinet storage. In the example below, the lower right stack is a single upper drawer with a single cabinet door below (where I store a stand mixer and other tall items.) We made the single cabinet door look like two drawers to match the stack on the left, which is all drawers.

just took this pic for another post...but it shows a hutch we have with center doors...if this helps. It's 16"

deep....the doors flanking it are 13"

Either all glass or just the center two doors glass. Whichever you do, be sure to put lights in the glass sections. They look really nice lit up if you have nice glassware or decor in them.

What are you storing in the uppers? Will they look nice all the time?

I would say yes to your earlier question: if the two upper centers are glass and the two sides are solid, I’d do like your sketch and have the two centers open from the center/ towards each other. So the center could be a single cabinet with two narrow ones at the sides.

The interiors of your glass front cabinets will need to be finished/painted. Also, what kind of shelves inside glass front cabinets? If wood, then consider how to light the interior. If glass shelves, lighting at top will work. Under cabinet for the countertop below, too.
