Looks like a Pieris Japonica to me. What do the flowers look like? I don't think they are known to spread.

Yes. I thought it looked like a rather chilly Pieris.

And I was thinking it looked more like a lanky mountain laurel, Kalmia latifolia. I have a very hard time imaging a pieris would thrive, let alone grow to that size, in Maine.

I would also add that with a few exceptions - like some caning shrubs - neither pieris nor kalmia are readily or easily dividable. Woody based plants seldom are.

I have a Pieris in Maine, 20 minutes south of Brunswick, though. Nowhere near that big, though.

Wow, the leaves on both the Peris Japonica and Kalmia Latifolia look very similar to my plant (and to each other in my eyes). The plant in my yard has never flowered! Which now I feel sad about because the pictures of flowers on each of these plants are quite beautiful.

I found some pictures of Peris “mountain fire” and I think it might be that, because some of the new growth comes in reddish. Mine is still a very dull red compared to some of the pictures I’m seeing, but a few look similar. Though I’m also seeing a mountain laurel “red bandit” with similar reddish stems/leaves.

I suppose either way, my plant is probably not very happy if it’s not flowering. And since I can’t divide it I suppose I’ll just let it be. It is under a large pine tree that we’ll eventually have to remove (too close to the house), so hopefully it will flower once that’s gone and it gets more light. At least now that I have an idea of what it is i can see about pruning. It is growing into the driveway a bit. I’ll have to look for something else to plant on my other spot where I need some privacy.
