Style of what is there is not the type for panel moulding. If you want the wainscot panels, you need to remove the chair rail first. Just my opinion.

I think the irregular openings do not make for a good panel arrangement on any of the walls I can see. Paneling works best in situations like your inspiration photo, where there are uninterrupted walls in which to set up the general panel size, which can then be altered to fit any window or door openings.

In your case, each panel relating to each of what seems like many openings would be a different width and sit different widths from the corners since you have at least one large opening butting into the corner.

Thank you for the input! I really love the look of molding and was hoping to figure out how to make it work in this room but you all have helped confirm my suspicions that it just isn’t well suited for it.

I would customize the size and placement as it relates to your furniture, art and lighting.

Oh gosh— please don’t paint the room white! Pretty please? That green-blue color looks wonderful with your rich wood tones, art work, and wainscot. The rest of your house is lovely, too!

I have to vote for NOT white on the walls. You have beautiful rooms and they need the color! It is so much more attractive to have color. White is so over-done. If you really want moulding how about doing it within the confines of the current wainscotting?
