I like winding down from the day as it gets dark, and I can put my jammies on and get comfortable. Doing it at almost 9:30 won't cut it.

It's just disruptive and only really benefits commerce.

Our day starts EARLY (this is not by choice) so we prefer the morning to get going early. So now it's going to be dark again in the morning when we start our day. UGH! For us, it's a big NO!

Many medical studies have indicated the health dangers associated with switching time, and have also found that standard time should be the one to stick with. I prefer standard time too. I detest the changes. Below is from a quick google:

Standard time, with its earlier sunrises and sunsets, is much better for your health, they say. So much better that the American Academy of Sleep Medicine published a new position paper this week concluding that seasonal time changes should be abolished in favor of standard time. (Nov 3, 2023)

What a bunch of BUNK!!! It's all arbitrary!! It does not matter one IOTA DST or not!!! What matters, what effects people is the switching!! Day light changes all on it's own as the year progresses so all this whining about getting up in the dark yadda yadda --changes naturally!!! I think everyone is capable of adjusting to the ebb and flow of day light when it happens naturally and gradually throughout the year. It's sooo silly to "fight" about which way!! What would help is if we could unify and fight for leaving it all alone! But as with most things opinions vary greatly so here we are enduring this stupidity twice a year until the end of time!!

We love the longer days! I do wish they would just leave it though and not switch back and forth. We love more time outside in the evenings. I'm not an early riser (although not a late riser either), so darker mornings do not bother me. I hate it for the school kids, but I'm sure they like more play time outside in the evenings too.

I miss sitting on the patio after dark in the summer. I get up early and go to bed early, so it is still daylight when I am sleepy in the summer. The days are not any longer, sunrise and sunset are just shifted.

    I MUCH prefer standard time.

    I prefer standard time.

When we’re into the days of triple digit temperatures, with the scorching sun and searing heat, it’s miserable for me to have an extra hour of light at night. And it definitely disrupts my sleeping pattern, which is not very good in the best of times.

Yes, Sherry, I guess I worded that wrong. Of course I know the days are not really longer, just more daylight in the evenings. Jilly, I feel for you! We are hot and humid here but nothing like your area. I'm sorry you deal with that. : ( Thankfully, I usually can't tell much sleepwise from the time change. You would love our mountain area during your hot season!! Come visit!

I prefer DST. I don't mind the changes. I would probably be fine if they just picked one and left it that way.

    Thank you, Tina. :)

I remember when they did away with it and the complaints were so numerous that they went back to switching again. So as much as we don't like switching, history would suggest we like *not* switching even less. I preferred it though when they switched a couple of weeks later in the spring and earlier in the fall.

I admit to not minding the 2 time a year shake up.

When the time changes back in November it comes with a comfortable, cozy feeling.

Let's split the difference and move 30 minutes and start forever. 😉

As we all know the differences in daylight throughout the year change by latitude - the further north the more change and less as you near the equator. So what someone in Miami, FL prefers may be different than what someone in Bellingham, WA prefers. For me, I'd prefer to stay on Standard time year round but if the choice is keep switching or DST I'd pick DST. The switching is nuts and totally arbitrary. I am still using a clock that adjust automatically but it's adjusts on the OLD dates so I'm actually switching that clock 4 times/year 🙄

I like standard time because evenings tend to be quieterwhen it gets dark. However, i like DST because I have trouble driving in the dark an d this gives me more hours to be out and about. I just wish we could pick one and stick with it.

I never get it straight which is which and reading all the comments, I can see value in each one. I know I am a super early riser but since I'm not working//driving anywhere, I like it fine. I do feel happier when it's lighter later, but that might also be because coincidentally the weather is milder. I agree about driving in the dark. As of today, I am more apt to do things later afternoon into the evening.

Overall a positive for me/us. Also don’t like driving home from work in the dark and we like longer evenings to grill, exercise, or go out to events. Like Jilly said, it can get super hot when we’re at the outdoor amphitheatre in summer so that’s the negative. Thats when I wear my tank top and skort 😊 (from the other thread).

The best thing about daylight saving time is in the fall when we get an extra hour back!

@Jilly, there is an article that I cannot post no matter how hard I try that's in regard to what you've said. To paraphrase, moving permanently to DST would be bad for our health. From Johns-Hopkins.

Since I grew up with it, I’m just used to it as part of the fabric of life. But, when my parents wintered there, I never had any idea what time it was in Arizona.

Days and nights do change in length winter vs. summer. DST makes already long days seem even longer, which is why I've always found it so confusing. It's not like we need a later sundown in summer, we need it in winter more, I'd think.

How would I know when to change the batteries in my smoke detectors and throw out my mascara were it not for these semiannual reminders?

That's all they are to me. I think they're as outdated and unnecessary as a 9-month school year.

Just pick one and stick to it.

Carolb - for those of us living farther north and in colder climates, longer daylight in winter has no advantages. In the summer here, the evenings are fabulous, so having longer daylight hours to enjoy them is wonderful.

I remember it getting dark by 4 pm in winter, when I lived in NYC. It would be totally dark of night by the time school or work was over. That was not fun.

@oakley I have no problem putting my jammies on at 7PM, no matter what the sun's doing! haha

I have always preferred more light at the end of the day. We live on the outer Cape - the dateline is just off of the coast. When I visit my family in Columbus, Ohio there is such a big difference in the time of light - having darkness later in the morning feels like a luxury because I can linger in my sleep and I like the cozy dark mornings. We lived for awhile in the Netherlands and were much further north - the sun never seemed to quit in the summertime. The Dutch would complain about their dark winters but I was always relieved when the days got shorter. Dutch people relished sunshine and would bask in it, leaning like flowers. They have a high incidence of skin cancer.

I wish Florida would stay on standard time like Arizona, we already have more daylight than most other states.

I prefer standard, but I'll settle for savings if we can stop this madness.

"I wish Florida would stay on standard time like Arizona"

The problem with that is then, every time you cross the state border, any time you call out of state to a business with certain hours, or family who don't get up so early, etc., you are changing the clock.

Floriduhs politicians want to change to dst permanently, I think it’s wiser to stay on standard time.

Same here, Emily! I remembered one of the reasons I don't like DST is because during twilight I get an eerie feeling, especially if I'm alone. I read a lot of people feel the same way. Dusk is okay, but not twilight.

"The problem with that is then, every time you cross the state border, any time you call out of state to a business with certain hours, or family who don't get up so early, etc., you are changing the clock."

It's kind of like living on the west coast, DST OR Standard time. So many businesses we have to deal with have their offices or CS #'s tied to east coast time zones. So, if you come home from work here and want to call a business for some reason, forget about it, they are closed.

For those of us night owls, getting up earlier to deal with things before our days start here is not a great option. I can't ever call my friends in the east after my dinner, because it's bedtime for them. I need more friends in Hawaii!

I just wish it would be decided once and for all.

Yes in the Fall! No in the Spring!

@kitschykitch, I'm with you! lol I love to nest so that would be perfect. There was a wonderful positive of twilight yesterday. DS lives on a hill behind us and while eating a late snack of cheese and olives, I saw DGS emptying trash in our shared dumpster, between both driveways. I went out to say hello and he shared snack time with me. :)

Oakley, I'm not getting what you are meaning about twilight? We have twilight year round. We even enjoy being outside after dark, weather permitting. A nice fire is just a plus! TBH, I really don't notice or get any feelings about twilight/dusk.

It's nice having the extra daylight in the evening.
