Which Driveway Extension ?!

Hello! I am going to extend my single car driveway with a gravel extension. I need help picking which. I’m considering either doing the extension parallel or perpendicular to my current driveway. This will be a DIY and any advice of anyone who’s done this would be so appreciated.

I’ve attached images but any feedback or advice would be super helpful!!

If it were me, I’d do something like this, but then incorporate some nice landscaping beds in the green-shaded sections

Assuming you can't do this on the left side. I would not want a car park close to the front of the house like your first picture. So more like you second picture would be better. Hope you know the gravel will be in your lawn all the time and hopefully you are in a warm climate without snow.

You’d prob need a permit for this, too, but an option.

Is there room to create the extra parking in the back of the house?

Sorry but there is no 'good' way to do this. Parking a car in the front yard is a bad look all the time every time. Is there room around back for this?

There isn’t room around back. There’s a stone wall and my back patio already in place. This driveway extension would only be used if a 2nd car is there which isn’t a lot. I’m looking for a cost effective solution to extend the driveway and I have the space. My front yard is quite large and figured using some space for this would be fine.

IMO then that part of the house will always look like a garage conversion is that what you want? Why can't the 2nd car park on the street . Since this is not often just play car shffle anything but doing what you are planning.

Anything is possible, if the function of having a second car parking space is important, then youll have to sacrifice a little curb appeal to get it.

How far from the road to the house? From the existing driveway to the front walk?

Do you have to deal with snow removal?

How are you going to prep and lay the gravel? Crusher run or pea gravel?

^well said - you have a classic ranch, seems a shame to fill part of the yard with gravel unless you really, really need the parking.

The house could use some refreshed landscaping and there are systems that enable you to park on grass, could be worthwhile to talk with a local lanscape designer and get a holistic plan

FWIW This Old House did a segment on grass driveways https://youtu.be/99-c1TRffhI?si=Kz0zp1jBnkJTlpdL

Pouring gravel in a yard is always going to be a downgrade, reducing curb appeal and home value. Especially in such a small yard as this.

Somebody down the street from me did this and the city made them scoop it all up. We neighbors were grateful.

If done well, I think ffpalms’ idea could be done in a way where the space could double as a nice-looking pea gravel patio, surrounded by native wildflowers, that meanders from the sidewalk to the driveway. But I would add plants between the gravel and street to partially screen the pea gravel area. When not being used for supplemental parking, you could put out some stackable Adirondack chairs around a (portable) fire pit.

To do this right, you would need to dig the area down to lay and compact a crushed stone base and have some kind of border edging (stones, flexible metal, etc) that would keep the pea gravel from creeping into your yard. You would maybe even want to epoxy the pea gravel (all of it, or the areas next to your driveway and sidewalk) to hold it in place better. So although gravel is often a less costly option, there’s still a lot of work and site prep that needs to happen to do it well.

I love P.D. Schlitz’s idea for plantings between the gravel and the street. I would find out if it is not allowed before giving up on the idea. Here’s a hasty mock-up to illustrate.

Thank you everyone for your help!! This was the initial inspo that I was looking at but definitely going to do some more thinking on it.

I think the boxy, square look might work a little better with the architectural character of the homes in your inspiration photos, but it might look alright at your house too. If going that route, I think this would be your best bet for placement within your yard.

the inspo photos also have significant and purposeful landscaping around the additional parking area so that makes a big difference, again I think a landscaping pro could help

Stumbled on this. It goes right along with what the others have been talking about with the plantings.
