I found this image at themenwithhats.blogspot.com. It shows some ideas that relate to your situation. I like the way they’ve extended the depth of the porch, and think you could get a similar look by making the step up span the entire width. This would allow you to not need a porch railing. In your case, the flagstone would be concrete so that it is harmonious with the wide step. I like the use of curves, too, that lead to the driveway.
