Dividing Ruby Ribbons switchgrass

Hi,

I have a slope in my front yard that is filled with ruby ribbons switchgrass. It's been there for about 7 or so years. I never knew I had to divide it to keep it thriving :(. Now, I have a bunch of struggling switchgrass. Attaching a pic if it's helpful. This shows about 25% of the whole switchgrass area. We have a lot! My question is: is it too late to try to divide these? Each one has a dead middle area if it's even still standing. Maybe divide the ones that seem salvageable and then replace the ones that have completely dwindled? We are in zone 7b in the New York area. (And yes, I know we have to trim these now to a few inches above the soil...) Thanks for any guidance or suggestions!
