So... do you want to swap out the plants in your current garden bed or enlarge the area and add more flowering plants? How much lawn do you want to keep?

Plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds are also very attractive to bees. Are you okay with bees? If you have a family member/close friend/neighbor who is allergic or afraid of bees then I wouldn't place a pollinator garden by the sidewalk.

Change the plants in my small current garden. Those flowers are gone now.

In the section by the sidewalk (where the blue flowers are in your photo) I'd plant coreopsis Moonbeam. In the other section I'd use coneflower Fragrant Angel and phlox Jeana. These are tough plants with a long period of bloom. You should be able to find them available locally.

If you don't have a hummingbird feeder on your deck yet, you must! Hummingbirds are fearless and they go zipping around while we're outside. It's so much fun to watch them up close.

Here is an article outlining some of the many plants that are attractive to butterflies. Be sure to also plant a selection of nurse plants for the butterfly larvae/caterpillars - babies require a different food source than do the adults :-)

Hummingbird feeders are a great idea but include plants they love as well to keep them around for as long as possible (they are year round residents in my area).

• columbine
• hosta
• lantana
• cuphea
• nepeta - catmint

• dicentra - bleeding heart

Hummers will learn to rely on a feeder so I agree with the above to also plant flowers and vines always in bloom for them. We used to travel alot and our feeders would run dry so problem solved.

We moved a few years ago but when we come back to visit, the hummers are still around for the flowers. They like many of the same flowers as butterflies.

If you plant, then they will come. It may take a while so don't get discouraged.
