wall decor help

Any ideas for what to put on this wall in living room? Ceilings are 8ft. From left corner to edge of tv stand is about 115in. The area between chair and edge of tv stand about 65in.

For reference, The picture on right side of tv is 24in x 24in. Would picture gallery work on the left side?

What’s on the other 3 walls in this room? Looks like a window might be on left wall. I ask because I think it matters if other art is in the room. If it’s small pieces here & there it might be that one or two larger pieces with images that can be seen well from across the room would be better - not create a cluttered look.

I’ll post pics of the other walls but just warning it is not put together and the entire room needs help/work/redone/ect.

I will be getting rid of windmill. The window treatment will be updated. The stuff on the wall that has the family sign/pics will be removed. The stuff on mantel will be removed. Basically the entire room looks awful so I’m trying to start over one wall at a time.

Mandy - that’s ok! 99% of things done in a space should take the entire space into consideraton to create a cohesive & put together room. Otherwise the result is all jumbled up.

Mandy, Thank you for posting the pics so fast! You have a very interesting collection of unique things & they are all related - a farm house look I think. Your space is large too. I have questions based on your comment about being not happy with the look of entire room. Before I saw your added pics, I said that the entire space needs to be considered in a room. Now, after seeing them, I think it’s even more important!. So - my questions to help get usable suggestions.

Do you have a set style in mind? Colors? How many people use this room - you do have lots of comfy seating.

What kind of window treatments do you want or like? Is light or privacy an issue? Since you have same treatments in LR & eating area (good) will you change both?

Are you planning to make any changes to furniture - adding any / taking any out / moving anything around? Are the couches recliners too? I think so & am asking because of no coffee table.

Do you have larger pieces of art in other rooms or pieces that you haven’t hung due to lack of wall space?

My first suggestion is to take everything that you don’t want on the walls out of the room. It helps to start with a clean slate.

This is very long. Pics to follow.

You are correct, I was initially going for the farmhouse type thing but am bored of it. The problem is trying to get away from it considering my current furniture and the style of the house in general. I also have way too much space that I don’t know what to do with. I’ll try to answer your questions.

Style going for and other: I like the French country look. I like vintage, antique, original and unique things. I don’t like over commercial, signs that have sayings or art pieces that everyone has. I want to be able to have decor that I can keep forever or incorporate things given to me by family. I have 3 inside/outside dogs, live on a dirt road and have messy teens and husband. I want the house to be livable, functional, comfortable and feel homey. I think openness and size of the area makes it difficult to feel homey. Even tho I have furniture just to “fill” space I don’t want to create separate spaces that won’t be used.

Other: where the windmill is I would like to put a display cabinet there to display old quilts given to me. I will post an example of what I’m looking at (I would not choose red).
I also think part of my problem is not stumbling across unique pieces that I like and secondly I obviously don’t have an eye for decorating. In the kitchen, above the cabinets, I have florentine trays and love the look and style of them (will post pic). That and the tile/painting beside the tv (will post up close pic) and the old sewing machine are the only items I really care for.

Colors: the furniture and floors are all very dark so likely need to stick to something a little lighter. bright whites I feel stick out too much w the darkness I have. I like blues and lighter colors, and weirdly enough gold as well.

How many people use room: only 4. The only reason we have so much seating is to attempt to fill the room so it didn’t look so empty. It’s the main place we hang out.

Light/privacy issues: no issues. We will live in the country w no neighbors

Window treatments: would like to put plantation shutters on the 3 windows in living rm and eating area. Curtains/drapes also?…not sure. the large windows by the fireplace aren’t far enough from the fireplace to be able to put curtains. Was thinking either Roman shades there or plantation shutters?

Furniture: yes the couches are all recliners. I’m kinda stuck w what I have for now but willing to move around. I don’t like matchy-matchy and wish I hadn’t gotten two couches that are the same.

Other larger art pieces: no I don’t. However a few years ago I bought these vintage ceiling tiles for wall decor but couldn’t find a place to put them that looked decent and also it was too white (will post pic). I’m willing to paint them if I can figure a place for them. If can’t go in living room can place in the eating area (in place of the big sign that’s currently there).

Here are some other views of the room that I’ve taken previously. This is before I got the rug and chair for the corner.

Here is a snapshot of the plan. Also here is a view from in between ledge at kitchen and back of couch. There’s about 6ft space. Should I put sideboards or tables behind the couches or will that be too much furniture going on? Another rug here?

Mandy, I just lost the over long reply I had written.😳 I‘ll try it again tomorrow. But, want to say that your favorite pieces are lovely. They are related to each other & not farm house - your style has changed. They speak vintage to me. My thought on French Country is that’s lots of florals, pine, pale colors. You mention wanting to create a homey feel. I think that happens with layers of lighting, some softness added through textiles & textures. Agree that adding white to your space is too bright but creamy whites aren’t. It’s warm & you have warm colors. Your fireplace is beautiful - it’s a creamy & warm tone. Your big chair in the corner looks like a great place to curl up with a book - if a side table, a lamp & a pillow & throw were added to it.

I’ll be back with thoughts I had about window treatments & quilt display. And ceiling tile tins - love them!

What a cute Dachshund - I’ve never seen that color. It’s the same color as my Papillon - she’s a red sable,

Just saw floorplan & pics. Wow, that live edge ledge at kitchen is gorgeous. Like the same stone from fireplace that’s on front half wall of kitchen. Question - are there floor outlets in the great room? I wondered how wide the space was behind couch & wall. Will the sewing machine fit on the wall where the family photos are? I wondered if it would show more there - be a focal point. And if the ceiling tins would fit on that wall above the sewing machine. Ceiling tins are 4’ x 4’ total? If you’re willing to try painting - have you heard of a product called RubnBuff? Comes in all colors in a small tube. Rub on with soft cloth & wipe excess off. Used for highlighting, This could be rubbed over the high spots to accent the detail on the tin. And, they have several shades of gold!

Mandy - Thinking about the wall with ”family” & photos - instead of ceiling tins there - what about the wall you orginally asked about - by the TV? They might make a nice statement with the chair in that corner & would have more impact there as well as they’re a nice companion to the painted tile on other side of TV that you like, Those 4 ceiling tins could be framed somehow - hiung on the wall with a decorative molding placed around them like a frame. Just have the corners of molding mitered to look like a frame. Finish the molding with a color or stain first. The arched top art that you bought for the TV wall - will it fit on the wall with family photos that you want to take off? Not sure about sewing machine in that spot - might be too long & block path from entry door? It’s a process though, right? Try things, see how they look.

Thank you so much for all the great input and your kindness. I’ll have to try some of these things out!

Hi Mandy - reading my posts to remind myself what I was thinking last evening. Lots of input but I did want to throw some thoughts for you to think about on window treatments and quilts! I’m still liking ideas of the large ceiling tins on large wall next to TV & using Rub n Buff paint to spark up those tins. Here’s a link to see info Rub n Buff I also still think Family photo wall is a good spot for the arched piece with darker frame that you haven’t hung. And, adding a side table & lamp to the corner chair will make it more inviting to sit there.

My thoughts on plantation shutters for windows - I like the look of those shutters but never wanted them myself for multiple reasons. The frames holding the shutter slats cover too much of the window glass & I don’t like folding the shutters back against the wall to fully uncover the glass. White, which I would’ve needed to use, is too formal looking. Darker colors are too heavy looking & wouldn’t go well in my home. Lastly, good ones are too much $$$. Instead, I hung inside mounted wide slat wood blinds. The slats are routeless - no holes for the strings holding slats. They sit in a ’cradle’ of string instead. I can raise / lower/ tilt slats for full view & light control & they’re a nice alternative to shutters. Good ones still $$ but not as much. They look good with or without drape panels or valances. Another alternative is woven wood or match stick shades. They aren’t room darkening & diffused light comes through them. Available in many colors. The wood adds nice warming texture to rooms; they can be inside or outside mounted & used with or without side drape panels or valances. Your lightweight drape panels would look great with either blinds or shades. Just rework the hanging of them to be straight panels at the sides & between windows. And, both blinds & shades will work for your fireplace side windows.

My thoughts on your quilts. Lucky you to have them & a great idea to create a display! My mom was a quilter so I have some & treasure them. 2 are in use on beds & I have a big quilt rack my dad made which I display others. I have a small one draped over back of a chair. I searched how to display quilts and there are so many options. I like to see them spread out a bit so the colors & designs show more than if they’re folded & stacked up where only sides are seen. There are quilt ladders which are tall & very wide & rungs are spaced apart. Some are ridiculously expensive because of wood type but seems like someone handy with small wood projects could pretty easily make one. I like the cabinet you showed but for me the attention is focused on cabinet as furniture & not the quilts inside it. This picture is my small lap quilt on my reading chair in the corner - it’s what inspired me for your chair which looks like a big curl up in chair too. Side note - the window above TV is an antique - over 100 years old. My husband took all the old layers of paint off it & stained the frame. That’s the original window frame on it.

PS - if that link for rubnbuff doesn’t work, just Google it. Great stuff!

I love your area. Very pretty. Nice window! I love all of your ideas and agree with every idea and thought you have had. Thanks for getting me heading in the right direction. I will have to post again when I get some changes so you can see the outcome. I appreciate your time and especially appreciate how kind you have been. You’ve been a lot of help. Thank you.

Mandy - You’re so very welcome! Creative thinking & collaboration on ideas is good brain exercise! I hope you have fun with your project of revamping your living room. It will take some time but with your clear vision of what you want the result to be, new ideas begin to flow. I do hope you post periodic updates!

Kathy, do you think the window treatments I do for the three windows need to be the same for the two big windows as well? Or as long as they are similar color and style?

  • last year
    last modified: last year

Mandy, I think it looks more cohesive / unified if all windows that can be seen from the same rooms do have a common theme in window treatments. I think you’re asking about the 3 windows on same wall as front door & the 2 windows on either side of fireplace. But, those windows in the kitchen table alcove & across the kitchen should be considered too. Our open floorplan homes make this more important. So, yes, they should be treated with a similar color & style. For example, maybe all the windows have the same shades or blinds but only some of them have added drapery panels or valances. Your front windows can have both but your fireplace windows don’t have the side wall space for drape panels that pull to sides. Maybe they have only shades / blinds or they have a valance too that’s the same fabric as panels at the front windows have. You see in the pic of my chair that my windows in great room have wood blinds only with a wood valance covering the header. My kitchen / dining area has the same blinds but also a custom made 24” long tailored box pleat fabric valance. Hope all that makes sense!
