What are you doing Monday 4824

Who's hosta are in the path of the eclipse? I am kind of excited about it. I have my tinfoil hat ready. I have small ones for the birds too. In a small way I hope something happens. I do not want all this media hype to go to waste. A fun day ahead.

Sandyslopes do you remember the quake in 1971? I was in Arleta then. I went out to watch the lunar eclipse and we were having strong aftershocks. A 6.5 in the morning and lunar lights out in the evening. What a day. My dad tried to get me to school that morning. I still chuckle over that.

So what are you up to?

Have a great day everyone.

Fire Marshal Bill here with an important message about the eclipse: DO NOT LOOK WITH YOUR NAKED EYE. Do not look with a naked cell phone eye. No weld helmets or sunglasses either. Get the correct glasses.

Up early as well. Wish I'd been able to sleep in.

Ann you are so lucky you are right in the path of the Umbra. It will get totally dark for you. I’m not anywhere close to the Umbra so I’m not sure how dark it will get, if at all. At least it’s sunny here so anything will be noticeable. I think I’m gonna cut back a few things I should have done in fall.

debra..10 of my relatives are headed to the racetrack..nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews..all young and energetic..I’m too lazy to go 😂..
not cutting back in the fall isn’t harmful in my opinion..I leave lots of things as they are going into winter..

    Fire Islands surrounded by debris..

My son and husband have gone to find a good spot to see the total eclipse. Right where we are it was to be 99% coverage. Not sure anyone here can see anything as it is cloudy!

In regards to gardening, my plan did not work out at all. Mother nature had her own plan! My pots have sprouted earlier than ever. I had hoped to get some of my indoor plants looked after before gardening seasoning began. Now I feel overwhelmed and behind!

I think we must be in total eclipse now. (3:21 pm) It's pretty dim outside.

Partial eclipse here, so we got lots of crescents through pinholes. The light was weird and everything felt a bit cool for about 30 minutes.

Also in the path of totality, just a little northeast of Ann. It was really, really cool. 😎

I am at work, we got 96% coverage here. Pretty cool. Light was similar to white nights at St Petersburg during late spring early summer. Not enough to be bright day but not dark like sunset.

Paula, I will never forget the Sylmar quake in ’71. I never want to be in an earthquake of that magnitude again! It was terrifying! Waking up to the house feeling like a giant was tossing it back and forth. A classmate of mine had a mom who worked in the hospital that collapsed, but thankfully she didn’t go in because she was sick that day.

Hahaha! I can’t believe your dad thought you should still go to school! Lots of aftershocks. I remember we all slept in the living room that night and watched The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and how they showed an aftershock we felt in the afternoon that happened while they were filming. I didn’t remember a lunar eclipse happened then, too!

At first glance I thought the pizza sofa was some new configuration for pizza from one of the big chains. 😊

I didn’t get to see the eclipse in person, but how exciting for those who did! I have neighbors that took their motor home to Dallas. I hope they got to see something through the clouds. Indianapolis looked like a great place to view it! I watched the coverage, which was a nice diversion from the usual news.

Utog, I heard about looking at the ground through the tree leaves. So cool looking!

I’ve never gotten fall cleanup done in every part of my yard, and it doesn’t seem to hurt anything. But it creates more work in the spring, which is the busiest time so I’m ALWAYS behind in some areas.

We’ve had wet, cold weather so I haven’t gotten much done in the gardens the past few days. But I did find a couple more Hellebores and some strawberry plants at a local nursery that I’m waiting to get planted.

we had perfect weather and a great view..funny to be sitting on my garden bench in the dark during the day..you could feel the temperature drop..lots of neighbors out..people cheered..a great memory..
    muddy but no standing water..

Nothing for me. No eclipse. Maybe about an hour before some plane chem trailed Jacksonville. Criss crossed the viewing area. So, what is a girl to do? I went to Ace and loaded up. I got Dream Queen, and 2 others plus some nice companion plants. It was a good day at Ace.

I got to see one of the babies. I put up bird houses along the back and I have a family of Eastern Bluebirds growing. Right now they control the yard's fly zone. They are also working my yard as bug collection agents. I got to see one of the little heads looking outside to the big world.

I do have a lot of catch up to do as I have been loafing. My son and I did manage to get one of the greenhouse frames back up, but I need to redo my tables this year. And I want to paint them blue to match the other ones. Sitting in my new recliner I got ideas galore.

Sandyslopes My dad actually went to work, was on time, but was sent home. I would have had to walk back home from Poly. There was another pretty good California quake in 1987 that had such a good jolt that our water table here in Jax moved by 2.5 inches.

I have to go feed the birds and oh what a joy my neighbor across the pond is getting re-roofed. Everyone have a great day!

I'm in Dallas. There were some clouds, but it opened up enough to see the best parts of the eclipse. I didn't ever get the glasses, so was just going to watch on TV.

I stopped at the nursery to get some expanded shale, and they gave me some viewing glasses. When I got to the grocery store, I looked up and saw the "crescent" sun. I gave the glasses to the cashier. I watched it on TV, and they said you can take off your glasses to see the corona shot. so, I went outside It was awesome, and I didn't expect it to be.

It got dark, the street lights came on for a very few minutes. My dogs weren't bothered at all.

I drove to southern Illinois to see the eclipse. Spent Sunday night in Kentucky then drove over from Bowling Green. GPS rerouted me around one bit of congestion but wasn't too bad.

The drive home was madness. Took about 1.5x as long as would normally take.

I had a good viewing spot and a great experience of the eclipse though. I knew Venus and Jupiter should be visible but it still blew me away when they appeared out of nowhere.

Paula - " Sitting in my new recliner I got ideas galore." I do the same. lol - Love the Bluebirds, wish they would nest here.

Didn't pay much mind to the eclipse, it did get a little dim here in SW MI for a few minutes. I was out cleaning up some of the garden & hosta beds but got distracted by several butterflies flittering around. That was the end of my workday.

Never saw so many Red Admirals so early in the year.

Not being in the totality path here in Milwaukee, I didn’t think anything would happen. However, that morning I hit on a link showing all areas that be affected and MKE was in the 90% area. I had a two o’clock massage appointment, right at the peak time. So I called my massage therapist and asked if we could move my appointment time a bit so I could view the eclipse. That was fine with her. So my DH quickly made a box for me. I went to my appointment, arriving 15 minutes early so we could watch together. When she saw my box she said, “oh maybe you’d like to use my glasses.” OMG!! The eclipse blew me away! To see a completely dark sky through the glasses with a bright Amber colored sun and the black encroaching moon so perfectly clear, was just amazing to me. A neighbor of mine who’s quite the world traveler plans to go to the 2027 eclipse in Egypt. I just may join her. There is one coming through MKE being in the full totality, but that’s in…..wait for it…..2099! I will be long gone!

Utog, your photos of the shadows are really cool!

Ann, your garden is getting greener and greener!

I have a few pips but it’s too early here with our last frost date being May 11-20. I remember when it was mid April. I put some dirt on those to protect them. Hopefully we won’t get any late frost. 🤞🏽

    Hmmmm. post disappeared, trying again.

Rain, rain, rain. Hope Ann isn’t floating away. THIS is why we built a berm.

    Inundation from nearby farm fields.

    indianagardengirl..you’re right 👍..the standing water’s back..thought of a joke..my Fire Islands are really islands! 😂..

a few hours later..a little less water

lindalana, nice seedlings. Yours are so much farther along than mine. How soon do you plant your vegetable garden? I have to wait until mid-May to June 1, depending on the forecast.

Ann, Indianagg, that's a lot of water! How much rain does it take to flood your yards like that? I don't know if I should give it a "like" or not?

It depends how quickly it comes down, and how saturated the ground already is. 3-1/2 inches this time did the trick. For me it runs off nearby fields. Like Ann, mine has already gone way down. I’m used to it at this point although glad we built the berm, as it at least gives me some spots that aren’t a river. I have some beds on the wet side that I can’t keep mulched as it just runs right off. We all have challenges. 😉

sandyslopes..my husband heard that since April 1 until today the rainfall set an all time record for this time period..I believe it..
indianagardengirl..that side of the lot is surrounded by higher ground..their water comes our way..🙁
“we all have challenges” is so true..

Sandyslopes, thanks! I use system that calls Wall of water, like individual greenhouse hoops. I will be planting in couple of weeks. Been doing it for years.

Nicholworth and indianagg, that some water! Do you get a lot of mosquitoes?

I just treated my standing water marshes.

lindalana..my standing water is temporary..I’d say my mosquitoes are just “normal”..

Same for me. Most of the water today is already below the level of the grass, so it doesn’t look bad. But it’s very squishy and your feet will get wet if you walk across it now. Sunshine tomorrow, and by Sunday I will be able to mow (if the rain is done 😉. )
