There are100s of VOC free or low paints find one for floors that will stand up well but before you do that you need to know what on there now is it oil based or maybe even lead who knows you need to test it to find out or the new paint will peel. I think a nice runner on the siars with a colorto work with the lighter floor could look nice

I would head to a Sherwin Williams or Ben Moore paint store and talk with someone there and get some good advice on formulas to use - FWIW we've had painted stairs for years and did opt to put in a fine mix-in to the paint that made the stairs less slippery (we did this years ago for young kids, you can't see it but it def made a difference) - will black stairs be hard to keep clean?
