Crown moulding or IKEA deco strip - views?

i have said from the start of the the kitchen reno that i want the space between upper cabs and ceiling enclosed (previos kitchen the cabinets were shorter and open at the top, and it was a horrible, grimy mess.) There is a bit over three inches of gap and it seems pretty consistent for the most part. i have been thinking to add crown moulding. Contractor has suggested using the IKEA deco strip with a panl behind to enclose the space.

while I don’t mind the IKEA deco strip, it does leave a shadow (I know for some a shadoe crown is "a look", just not sure it is mine), and i am nit sure how it will look with a panel behind. any opinions/advice on this?

If I go with crown moulding, how do I determine how big it should be. dimensions at HD website appear to be for the flat height - how does that work when angled.

adding some pics along with a pick of other trim in our house (we don’t have crown moulding elsewhere, so it would be just for the cabinets, not continuing on the wall).

Scribe a flat stock trim to the ceiling line, painted to match cabinets. No goo, no "crown".

Yes to Jan's suggestion. That is what we have done in the three kitchens we have installed. Like you, we have lived in old homes with historic molding and door frames. Any kind of crown just looks sort of faux and over the top. Scribing a flat stock trim looks the best.

And, I'm with you on loathing any kind of gap between cabinets and ceiling. Good luck on the final stretch of your remodel. Would love to see the completed room.

No crown and IMO you should have raised the uppers a bit so thta that gap at the top would just need minimal scribed install . I often now do 21" from counter to bottom of uppers I think the old 18" space is not ideal for many items we store on the counter now.

Thanks. the cabs are actually at 22" above counter (although trim for light rail will take it to about 19 I think). Ceilings are 9 foot. We are on the taller side and also used to working on the counter with smaller, shallower cabinets that were hung fairly high.
