Or maybe rredpenn could send the smoke alarm batteries to mouse maker, who could then throw them at the drinks - its a win-win.

The last smoke detectors we bought came with 20 year batteries. They're intended for cathedral ceilings and such. No more beeping.

The buzzing/ humming sound of my refrigerator drives me insane. I can hear it through the wall to my room!!!

those goofy new 10 year light bulbs lasted about 10 months
  • 13 years ago
I can also hear it everywhere else around. Plus it's a rental home... I can't wait to move! What bugs me as we'll is the long flourescent lights. It feels prickly and has a horrible hum.

get out the noise demons are everywhere they disguise them selves as fall bugs

All the little noises tells me things are running well. Noises are not annoying, but an indication that something is going to malfunction and cost me a fortune to fix!!! Living in the country, there are a different set of sounds, but I think the one that gets me the most is gunfire -- lots of hunters (can't figure out what they're hunting as it's not THAT far out in the country) who target practice. Living alone, squeaking doors are "burglar alerts." I have to agree with the smoke alarm alert.

My stairs creak non-stop!! So squeaky even my cat can make them creak when he steps on them!

I've had lots of ideas with regard to the noisy neighbors, but basically they just need to grow up and take responsibility for their behavior. I have seen some of their parents who don't seem to know much better than the kids, so I know where they learned it, unfortunately. One example--there is parking only on their side of the street yet people insist that they can park on both sides :) well, no :) So the parents pull up and park right next to (I am not kidding) the big no parking on this side sign and I tell them, you know? because I am so irritated!!!
and they act like it's not important and they didn't see it. yup. and these people are allowed out of the house?

We have a huge pipe line supply company about a mile from our home. Everyone gets tired of the incessant PINGING of pipes hitting each other. I would like new windows for my home to lock out some of the noise.

baby powder swept into the hardwood. Lessens the noise.

When the washing machine goes on spin cycle when it's really full, it's too noisy!
When our neighbours move their chairs on the stone floor of their conservatory. I can even hear the screeching downstairs in our bedroom. I'll have to remind them again to get/or present them with some felt pads to hug their chair legs. :-(

Our dryer from the early 80s has a built-in-ear-piercing buzzer that cannot be silenced-ugh! Also, the random pops and bangs in the wood floors scare the bejesus out of me when home "alone" :o
And yes, those necessary, but incessantly annoying smoke alarm chirps, like an enormous cricket on steroids. Why do they all chirp when one is disconnected? It's as if they are a gang of some sort.
@bbarick -- I think I have determined that the motor running sound is actually coming from my refrigerator.
I need help! I moved into my house three months ago. When you turn on the water (anywhere in the house) on low, you get a loud whistling sound throughout the house. We've isolated it to the sprinkler system, but it's weird: When we turn off the system from OUTSIDE the house (there's a lever on our outside wall), the sound doesn't stop. But when we turn off the sprinkler system from the INSIDE shut-off, it does stop. Since it's about to be winter, I can just leave it off until next spring, but then I'll be dealing with the same thing all over again. Any suggestions???

My dogs nails on the hard wood floors. The constant click click sometimes works my last nerve. The groomer can never get them short enough.

Maybe I have high house-noise tolerance. But, it seems I have had most of these noises at some point or other in my
homes ( except the gurgling toilet – that one is new; and I have never possessed
a dryer) but none of them ever bothered me much at all and some, like fridge
and faucet, were too easily remedied to
    be countenanced.

Now, cars are a different matter altogether
    – I absolutely cannot abide a clanking, hissing, jiggling, squeaking of any
sort there. I go mental: 0 to 200 in a nanosecond. I want to hear my engine purr and my gearbox
whirr and apart from that sweet silence!

Washing machine spin cycle. Sometimes I'm certain that thing just wants attention and is going to meet me in the hallway, like an attention starved pup.

I vote "other". It is the sound of the house moving due to temperature changes. Gives me the creeps because it always happens at night!

I hate it too when the washing machine goes bumpy, bump- it's as if it is calling out to you " Ay! You better get here before I take off and fly away!" haha don't have that anymore though now. Also, refrigerator making the switch off and switch on automatic sound. Plus, hubby's squeaky sports machine! That is annoying too but we have a sports room now so, solved.

    Creaking floors and doors!

    The beeps:

the smoke detectors, though hooked to the electricity, beep when the back up battery is low. Ok, I can live with that.

the clothes dryer when it's finished

the refrigerator door when left open

the freezer door when left open

    the coffeepot when it's done

    my clothes iron

    the microwave

    the oven

I saw the suggested "humming refrigerator", but unfortunately that would not do ours justice. Ours bangs, pops, knocks, and gasps. It only seems to want to share late at night. We are remodeling in the next few months, and that will be the first thing to go!

    My 2 dogs snoring.
Central vacuuuuuum...however, the noise stays around the nearer areas, garage, kitchen... I can certainly hear a neighbor's on the street below mine, and wonder what brand that is, noisiest of all by far.

Maybe not the worst, but funny -- kept hearing consistent blasting for weeks this summer, and happened to ask at the farm stand up the road if they knew where someone was building a new development. My neighbor laughed and said, "That's our bird cannon!" Apparently such a thing exists and goes off periodically to discourage birds from all of their delicious crops.

Relieved that our shrinking local farmland was safe from bulldozers, I shared the good news with my husband. Not long after, he was on a business golf outing, and his fellow players were startled to hear that same shotgun or blasting sound. And didn't hubby just have the obscure fact to explain it, "Oh, don't worry. That's just a bird cannon..." LOL.

The dishwasher running! I have an older one that still works well, so it doesn't make sense to replace it. I run it at night before bed and turn on the fan in the bedroom to drown out the sound.

My work computer has to stay on all night, I can not shut it off. I bought a new house so I could move it out of my bedroom and into it's own room/guest room.

Worst noise for me is the garbage disposal, and I use it as seldom as possible.

I like hearing the ice machine because I like to be reminded that it is working. It seems to stop periodically to take a rest before it starts working again.

The previous house (same age as current one) used to creak almost constantly, and it made it seem like it was haunted, perhaps by the previous own who died there, murdered in her front yard.

I vote for the buzzer on the dryer. Man but it can be loud!
